Outlaw King (2018)

Heads up, Netflix 09.11.2018. is dropping this huge historical epic called "Outlaw King" starring Chris Pine (yeah, the guy from Star Trek and Wonder Woman). It’s directed by David Mackenzie, who did that killer movie Hell or High Water.

The whole thing goes down in Scotland during the occupation by England. Now, just to be clear, it isn't a sequel to Braveheart with Mel Gibson, but the story fits right in the gap between the death of William Wallace and the Battle of Bannockburn.

We follow Robert the Bruce (played by Chris Pine), this Scottish nobleman trying to liberate his homeland from the English and claim the throne. Like I said, it picks up after William Wallace is gone.

Yeah! It’s basically Game of Thrones minus the dragons and all that other fantasy nonsense... 🎉 🎉

Honestly, whenever I hear the words "movie" and "Netflix" used in the same breath, my skepticism levels just skyrocket. Every single Netflix movie I've sat through—with maybe one lonely exception—has been somewhere between straight-up garbage and completely unwatchable. This trailer isn't doing much to win me over either, so I’m fully bracing myself for yet another big-budget flop...
Just to get this out of my system, though—unrelated to this specific flick—I thought "Hell or High Water" was total trash.
Netflix really ought to just stick to series, even if they have churned out a mountain of junk there too.

I've actually enjoyed myself with some of Netflix's series.

Generally speaking, I'm a fan of historical movies or shows where nobles are constantly warring over power. The intrigue, the traps, all that...

Basically, the stuff that makes life interesting. 🙂

Look, Netflix has a few gems hidden in there, but let's be real—about 90% of what they put out is straight-up garbage.

If something is available to watch for free, why ask if it's "worth" the watch—or rather, if it's worth the investment? You haven't paid for it, so there's no money to lose. I suppose I can, though it isn’t really about specific details—it’s more about the entire movie, which basically screams boredom from the very first second. Honestly, it’s become a bit of a trademark for Netflix films, so I wasn't exactly shocked. They’ve clearly mastered a formula designed to actively repel the viewer starting with the opening shot. I don't quite get why they'd throw all that money into a lavish historical spectacle when they're just following the same template used for 99% of their previous releases—films that seem to have one singular purpose: killing the viewer's interest immediately.
Boredom is a childhood ailment that Netflix producers just haven't grown out of yet. It's strange, really, because even their series feel like more of the same.

Haha, honestly, the guy hit the nail on the head—the movie was just painfully dull. I really let the director's reputation and the subject matter lure me in, but what can you do when reality fails to meet the hype?
