For about a week now, I’ve been feeling this specific "spot" of pain in my right breast—it's located right next to the nipple (on the right side). It hurts when I touch it; it isn't an excruciating sensation, but there is definitely discomfort.

I have performed a self-examination, but I didn't feel any unusual lumps or abnormalities, and I haven't noticed any discharge from the nipple either...

Should I be panicking here, or is this likely nothing serious?

Thank you 🙂

If you don't mind my asking, how old are you?

It’s actually pretty common for your breasts to feel sore or tender depending on where you are in your cycle.

I’d definitely suggest checking in with a gynecologist, or maybe even just your primary care doctor—you could ask for a referral for a breast ultrasound if that makes you feel better.

I am currently 28 years old...
I honestly have no idea where I even am in my cycle because things are incredibly irregular and occasionally just stretch on forever. My last one lasted three whole months, and now it has been over two months and I still haven't started my period. And before anyone asks—no, I am not pregnant...
Recently, I decided to try a more holistic approach to get things back on track, so I started taking some PMS relief supplements from a wellness brand and sipping on some herbal teas specifically formulated for women's health.

I can't help but wonder, could there be any connection between those supplements and what's happening?

I would honestly suggest scheduling an appointment with a gynecologist, or even just seeing your primary care physician to get a referral for a breast ultrasound.

Wait, what kind of referral could a regular GP even provide for something like that?

Yeah, basically, if you want to see a specialist, you’ll first need to grab a referral from your primary care physician.
Then you just schedule an appointment with them for the ultrasound. Honestly, there's really nothing to be afraid of—it doesn't hurt at all, and it'll finally give you some actual answers about what's going on.

It could honestly be anything. I mean, my own chest was aching for a while because I used to go out for runs wearing a non-athletic bra instead of a proper sports one.

Well, I think I’ll head over to Austin then, as soon as I can carve out a free afternoon... 😢

If money isn't really an issue for you, I’d say just look into one of those private clinics—you know, like a Mayo Clinic or something similar. Just give them a call, book an appointment, and I honestly think you could probably get seen within a few days. Definitely let me know how it goes!

Well, if I actually decide to pay out of pocket, I’ll just go to my regular doctor in Chicago; she has an ultrasound machine on-site, so she can probably just take a look herself... 🤷

Anyway, does anyone know roughly how much an ultrasound scan like that costs these days?

I don't know, I guess I'm not entirely sure if every gynecologist offers breast ultrasounds during their appointments. It might be worth checking around or asking around to see what the standard practice is at your local clinic. Maybe you could give your doctor's office a quick call just to confirm?
I actually went to see Dr. Nemetov last fall. I didn't pay full price, though—I had a referral from my primary care physician, so it ended up costing me about... $10..

If you happen to be heading to the gynecologist for a breast ultrasound, I’d suggest giving them a quick heads-up beforehand. Maybe just mention that you're looking to get the imaging done during the visit, and definitely don't forget to ask about the cost. It might be worth checking if they take your insurance or if there's an out-of-pocket fee, just so you aren't caught off guard by the bill later. It's always better to be prepared, I guess.
