I’m calling for a ban on bringing up someone's upbringing or how they were raised
and anyone who mentions it should get hit with at least a 100-point penalty!
I’m asking for this because people keep dragging "upbringing" into debates constantly!!
To me, it’s just an insult, a total ad hominem attack!!

What does how someone was raised have to do with any argument made here!!
It seems to me like people only bring up parenting to be disrespectful
and stir the pot!!!
If I say Josip Broz Tito was a criminal—what does my childhood have to do with that!
If I complain about getting a ticket for parking in the wrong spot
WHAT DOES MY UPBRINGING HAVE TO DO WITH IT!?!?!!?

Let me be clear: it’s just a fancy way of insulting someone
by attacking their parents—like, "who made you, you're clearly a mess!!!"

Otherwise, you can respond to any single claim, statement, or fact by just saying "you were raised wrong"!!!
You could take anything written here and just say: Your parents failed you!!!!

We’re adults here, let's stop with the childish taunts and insults!!!!

If you feel the same way about this "upbringing" nonsense, back me up!!

I’d actually suggest we ban any mention of how someone was raised at home

What does someone's childhood have to do with a point being made here?!
It feels like people only bring up how someone was raised just to be insulting

If I say Josip Broz Tito was a criminal—what does my upbringing have to do with that!
If I complain about getting bad service at a Starbucks—how is that related to my parents!
WHAT does my upbringing have to do with it!?!?!!?

Let me be clear: it's just a high-brow way of attacking someone's family
by basically saying, "Well, look how you were raised, you're clearly a mess!!!"

Otherwise, you can respond to any argument, statement, or fact by just attacking their upbringing!!!
You could take anything written here and just say: "Your parents failed you!!!!"

We're adults here; let's drop the playground insults and childish jabs!!!!

If anyone else thinks the way people talk about "upbringing" here is nonsense, back me up!!

Are you 100% sure about that bolded part?

I am!
There's a poll right there, so just cast your vote!
Or are we gonna fight until you ban me or something?

I can't exactly drop a ban hammer on you here even if I wanted to...

Look, I’m not trying to start a fight with you, I was just genuinely asking what you thought about it...

Factually? Zero. How you’re raised—and honestly, it's not just about home life—definitely dictates how you present your arguments, no matter what the topic is.

I stated my opinion as a fact!

Sarah Edwards38 said:Zero facts. How you present an argument—any argument—is all about how you were raised.

But none of that matters when we're talking about, say, Politics!

What does upbringing have to do with appealing a ban or a warning!?

Honestly, outside of the Family thread where parenting is the topic,
this stuff has no business being in other discussions.
It's nothing but pure trolling and baiting fights!!

What are you even supposed to say to that?!?!
Start proving you had a good childhood
or lecture the person who brought it up about their bad upbringing!?!?!

I haven't seen a single thread where "upbringing" actually added anything useful!!!!

To put it mildly, it’s just a "polite" way to be insulting!!
It's just baiting people and drifting off-topic—total trolling!

Charles Martin2 said:Man, all of that is totally irrelevant when you're actually debating stuff like Politics!

Actually, it has everything to do with discussing anything at all, including Politics.

Look, if someone doesn't have even a shred of basic decency or manners while they're talking, everyone else reading the thread has every right to call out how they're acting.

No way!
If they break the Reddit rules, punish them for that.
Don't start dragging their family into it.
Everyone has a black sheep in the family somewhere.
Plus, talking about users on Reddit
is already against our existing Forum rules!!

Bringing up privacy is pointless here
since we're all anonymous anyway!
Otherwise, we might as well just dox everyone
and let people judge what others write based on who they know in real life!

What's the point for you or Daniel Ward87 to bring up upbringing now?
Trying to prove you and your families are perfect in real life? Seriously?!!?!?

I get using that to shame kids,
but we're all adults here, some of us even have kids ourselves.
And there's no scientific proof that how you were raised
actually dictates how you act when you join a thread, say...

That would just be the old "apple doesn't fall far from the tree" line.
Just some tired, small-town logic.
Total nonsense!!!

Family and privacy are protected by anonymity here!!!

If you want to talk about someone's background or privacy, you better back it up with facts.
On Reddit, that's strictly forbidden by the rules!!!!!
Besides, this is clearly just a way to insult and belittle people!!!

Man, every time I recall those comments you made about my mother and autism, I can’t help but let out a little smirk at these sudden demands and this newfound sense of moral righteousness...

But hey, as they say, if someone clearly lacks even a basic foundation of manners—and they go out of their way to prove it—you point it out. It isn't an insult, provided you aren't being a jerk about it... which is something some people seem to struggle with...

I mean, if we’re going by that logic, everything becomes an insult depending on how you frame it... even mentioning someone's upbringing...

Anyway, I have a question for the esteemed moderators over on the Politics subreddit... and honestly, even for the Forum President...

How much longer are you going to let clones of banned users run wild? They aren't even posting anything meaningful; they just swoop into the Politics section and start insulting everyone the second they log on...

Because from where I’m sitting, it looks like certain rules—especially the ones that actually *should* be followed—are being treated more like suggestions...

I've been waiting for you to chime in!!
See, you're one of those guys who constantly brings up "upbringing" in debates!
The first time you brought up upbringing on the Cacic thread, you saw exactly where that leads!!
Slowly but surely, it turns into talking about childhood and all that junk.
I want to wipe this whole debate and poll off Reddit once and for all!
Honestly, there's zero argument in this constant bickering and sniping.
And I definitely don't see how this helps or improves any discussion!
If you start bringing up upbringing, I'm reporting it as trolling every single time.
But since nobody ever punishes you, to me, it's just a sign that we need to keep talking about how people were raised!
Unless the mods ban me, then I'll complain, but it won't matter anyway.
Because, man, I'm just telling it like it is!
To be blunt, I consider you, along with a few others, a "certified troll"!

I have no clue who all the clones are!
Start a thread about it and see what happens!

The way people were raised at home and out on the streets... it definitely shows in how they act on Reddit.

Look, you're one of those people who constantly brings up "discipline" whenever you're losing an argument!
And once you tried pulling that "discipline" crap on me over at Cacic's thread, you saw exactly where that was headed!!

Sorry, but if someone actually falls for the very behavior they claim to be fighting against, they honestly don't have a leg to stand on.

Yeah, it’s all just bits and pieces—more bits here, fewer there. It's basically just a whole lot of nothing.
And honestly, when it comes to debating, especially around politics, it’s all just a waste of time.
Bringing up how people were raised at home? That’s nothing but a straight-up provocation!

I could jump in right now and give Sarah Edwards38 a piece of my mind too. Just saying:
I wasn't expecting anything else from you.
There’s just no helping them. It’s a total lack of discipline.
The home-cooked kind, obviously!

If someone starts acting up and insulting you, just report them.
Just throw whatever you want into the debate.
It’s just a cheap provocation.
THAT'S IT! NOTHING LEFT!

Sarah Edwards38 said:Look, if you actually start following the exact rules you claim to be fighting against, you’ve basically lost the argument. There's nothing left to say.

I'll report the behavior first, then wait at least a day.
And then it just happens all over again. It's the same cycle. A hawk gets too cocky and loses its edge.
Time to take on Tom my way and in my own style!!

Should we really just take that and step aside for some provocateur?
Who actually believes that being soft on weaklings just makes them even more entitled? It’s a joke.
Patience and tolerance? Not my style. That kind of stuff just isn't in my DNA.
If the people actually in charge won't do their jobs, then I guess I'll just have to take matters into my own hands!

When I finally lose my cool and snap, I’m more dangerous than a grizzly bear in the Rockies!
Grinding, hustling, smashing through it; I ain't stopping until I'm wiped.
Then I’m gonna go for a stroll, grab something sweet, and just chase butterflies!

Look, I just take advantage of that behavior. First with the other guy.
That’s the guy who started it all.
Then just come over to my place!

Gotta follow the rules, at least some of them...

What kind of poll is this 😕 No offense intended 🤷

If I tell you you can't read—is that an insult?

Or just a fact? 🤷

It’s a misunderstanding!
You clearly think literacy is just about books,
so you twist it just to act superior.
But since you aren't fully hypocritical, who knows why
you're making all these unnecessary faces
that totally give you away!

Like the old saying goes:
The mouth can lie, but the face never does!

I was trying to poke fun at it. The point is, some people on this Reddit lack basic manners—that's an undeniable fact. Of course, things get messy when you use that fact to dismiss someone entirely. No matter how much it bothers you, calling it a "severe insult" worthy of 100 points is a stretch.

I remember some admin once told me something that I still totally agree with any tool can be turned into a weapon (and yeah, they meant that literally).

Over on the Politics subreddit, when people start talking about "how someone was raised," it’s ALWAYS just a way to take cheap shots at the other side—basically just pure trolling.

Sure, you might find an exception here and there, but honestly? It just proves the rule.

On our US forums, bringing up "how someone was raised" is always just a way to take cheap shots at the other side—it's pure trolling.

You might find an exception here and there, but they usually just prove the rule.

So, mods should probably start treating that as trolling and hand out the appropriate penalties.

Anthony Jackson2 said:so the mods should probably just call that trolling and hand out a penalty accordingly

Especially since people on here don't have any business trying to police each other or jumping into personal attacks. Honestly, my upbringing, how well I write, or my general vibe shouldn't be anyone else's concern. They should stick to what I actually post, and if that's offensive, just report it. That’s what the mods are there for—to make sure everyone stays within the rules regarding behavior and basic decency.

That's why I think once someone starts bringing up "how you were raised," they've totally crossed the line. It's out of bounds. So yeah, I voted "is an insult" because nobody even offered "trolling" as an option here.

Anthony Jackson2 said:I was just trying to make a point there. The reality is some people on these boards clearly lacked decent manners growing up, and you can't ignore that. It becomes an issue when people start using that as a weapon to invalidate someone else. No matter how much it bugs you, it’s hard to call that a major insult—definitely not worth a 100-point penalty.

But we aren't discussing people's upbringing on the politics board!
Plus, how you feel about it is obviously tied to where you stand on the issue!

Anthony Jackson2 said:In that case, mods should treat it as trolling and hand out the right penalties.

steeleagle70 said:Users shouldn't be policing each other or resorting to personal attacks. My background, my literacy, or my manners have nothing to do with anyone else here. That’s why I think as soon as someone brings up "how someone was raised," they’re crossing a line. I voted "insult" because it wasn't framed as "trolling."

I flagged it as an insult because it targets privacy!
But I've always reported stuff like that as trolling instead!
