Saw the bio on PBS today (well, actually yesterday).
Pay it Forward

The script, the characters, the production... I don't even have the words to really praise it. No complaints here. I just liked it.

Starting this thread so you guys can share what you thought...

The movie was alright... but that ending? Total garbage. It should’ve been a happy ending, dammit!😢

I watched it too... and I found myself completely falling apart...
I can't bring myself to agree with the idea that it needed a happy ending. Why?
The reality is that this world we live in is just... broken. To borrow a phrase from that little kid in the story.
My takeaway after sitting through this film is quite sobering: Don't even bother trying to act selflessly—because the cost will be far higher than you ever anticipated.
It’s a brilliant piece of cinema for our current era, serving as a catalyst to make people honestly reflect on their own lives and whether they truly have a sense of purpose.
It left me wondering what, if anything, I am actually doing to make a meaningful difference in the world...

Look, just so we’re clear... I said the ending should have been happy because that’s what I wanted to see😬... Honestly, I was convinced from the jump that it would be a happy ending. It’s not like I sat there doing some deep, intellectual analysis of the cinematography or whatever, and I certainly didn't walk out of the theater feeling inspired to go change the world. Let's be real—the world is a mess anyway, so why bother?🙂

To say I performed a deep analysis would be an overstatement; perhaps I am simply perceiving patterns where none truly exist, which seems to be my recurring habit. Please, excuse me, I find myself drifting through a bit of a melancholy fog lately—feeling quite like a moody teenager again, though I suspect my assumption that I had outgrown those adolescent whims was perhaps a bit premature..

Look, it's just hormones. It’s totally normal, especially during those teenage years. 😬

I'm afraid your conclusion misses the mark entirely... at least if you're looking for the actual "message" the movie was trying to send.😉

To me, the film felt a bit too saccharine.🙂
And honestly, I wasn't expecting such a gut-punch of an ending.😢

The only thing that really rubbed me the wrong way was Kevin Spacey's character. Now, don't get me wrong, Kevin Spacey is always a cool actor, but the character itself? Not so much. That scene where Helen Hunt shows up at his place felt totally off. He played him as this pathetic, confused, insecure mess, and it just felt forced. They could have handled that vulnerability with a lot more nuance; instead, it came across as overly melodramatic and hard to swallow.
But hey, that's just one small gripe among many...

It seems you all are clinging a bit too tightly to my comments from yesterday—statements that, if I recall correctly, Michelle Hall9 would characterize as being driven by nothing more than a sudden surge of hormones.
There is no shame in that, though; my perspective has shifted quite a bit today, much like how one’s outlook changes once the holiday season has finally wound down.🎉 🙂

I saw this movie a few years back. Most of the specifics have blurred together by now, but I can still feel that core message—that warm, philanthropic heart at its center.😍...it’s the kind of stuff that feeds my idealistic soul...

It’s one of those films that actually got under my skin, which is usually my litmus test for whether something is actually good—it hit me right in the emotions. 😳
God, I was a total wreck. I cried my eyes out...🙂

Hey, can someone refresh my memory on how that ended exactly?

I was rewatching the film—it’s been quite a few years—mostly just to see Kevin Spacey again (personally, alongside Pacina and Jeremy Irons, he’s one of the most charismatic actors out there), but I missed the ending...

Anyone? A quick reminder? I know the kid dies, or something along those lines, right?

The irony, I suppose, is that the kid was killed while he was essentially just trying to do the right thing—which, honestly, happened almost by accident because that bully only pulled the knife to try and scare him off rather than actually intending to kill him.
