Post count discussion

Sorry if I'm dragging this whole "missing posts" thing back up again.

Woke up this morning to find my post count sitting at zero. Look, I know I spend most of my time in the off-topic sections. I’ve contributed some entries here and there—mostly stuff about earthquakes, Zud, or music—but nothing major.

Yesterday, I got a notification to pick my contributions for their big project, but then this morning? Zilch. Total zero. Thank God those editors actually organized and saved everything properly, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to find my work.

But seriously, I have no clue how I could just drop to zero overnight. 🤔

And how does someone like Rachel Richardson still have over 100,000 posts? 😳 I find it hard to believe they all actually went into the encyclopedia. 😳

Anyway, if you guys aren't interested in explaining this anymore, just delete the thread and close it out. ☕

Seriously though, it’s not even about people scraping posts. It’s just wild that absolutely nobody—and I mean nobody—bothered to step up and explain what's actually going on and why.

Even if it was just a quick heads-up or something, I think the community deserved a post explaining the situation. But hey, if they don't want it, let them think whatever they want.

The forum is being cleaned out and the archives are getting wiped. What else would you expect? It’s the only logical move. If you're really that obsessed with your post count, just scribble it down on a piece of paper and do the math yourself at home whenever you feel the need. 🍿

No, sorry, that doesn't really clear things up for me. Could you be more specific? For instance, take those assignments I turned in, or some of the other topics I've posted about—I noticed they haven't been moved to the archives yet. 😳 My posts over there weren't even deleted. Either way, they didn't count toward my "opus." 😳 I don't get it. Why?

I'm not saying it’s some life-altering tragedy or anything. But getting a zero on my assignment this morning? Yeah, that was a bit of an awkward little surprise. 😳

I assume those posts are from various chat threads still hosted on the main subforums—meaning they haven't been moved to the "Archive" or "Trash"—even if they are inactive or locked. That would explain why my own post count hasn't really decreased either, since I mostly participated in chat threads.

I am aware that post counting varies depending on the specific subforum, but someone more knowledgeable would need to clarify which ones follow which rules. 🙂

Still, it is quite unusual for you to have such a low count, or rather, none at all. 🤔

Yeah, it's weird. Clearly a glitch in the counter. We'll eventually need to run a full recount, but that's a massive server-intensive task, so it won't happen anytime soon.

Your actual post count is 28555 and you've been active across plenty of subforums. All those posts exist—the counter just glitched out.

28,555? That’s what it says on my dashboard, but honestly, I think the odometer just lost its mind. In reality, the thing is sitting at over 500,000 miles.

I’ve actually got a question for you all, and while it isn't directly about the thread title, it does have to do with the view counter. Since the admin is hanging out here, I figured they might find this interesting too. 🙂

On Grammar, specifically the Russian language thread.
That thread was started back in 2004. My last post there was in November 2020, where I noted that the view count was starting to climb really fast.
So, over the course of sixteen-plus years, that thread had about 400,000 views. But then, in just the last two months, the view count shot up by 5 million. What's weird is that nobody has even posted anything new in those last two months, and even if they had, a jump like that would still be totally insane.

I've only noticed this specific pattern on that one thread. Have any of you forum regulars seen anything similar happening with other threads?

The title of this thread is "Blah blah/Russian language - we speak Russian! — blah"

'Russian language' and even 'we speak Russian' are likely fairly common searches on Google, which explains why this topic shows up in the results...

Between Americans and Russians, there's a combined pool of roughly 143,895,551 people. Given the era of COVID and remote schooling, demand for the term 'Russian language' could have easily spiked.

Besides, opening a page, even if just for a second, counts as a view...

Something similar might be happening with 'we speak Russian'—perhaps some nationalist Facebook group formed and they're all searching for kindred spirits...

Or maybe the view counter just malfunctioned.

Anyone interested in buying? I’ve got over 15,000 in stock. They aren't bad, but they aren't exactly geniuses either, so I'm letting them go cheap... 😁

Don't mess with me! So that's the trick! I've been sitting here for days wondering how on earth the Social Science subforum pulls in 800 or 1,000 simultaneous users. That's a massive number for any subforum, let alone Grammar. I've had all sorts of theories running through my head... This is pretty interesting. Thanks for the heads-up.
