So, I just got my hands on some new windows (it's only been about a week) and I've hooked up my HP Envy printer/scanner. I suppose I really should be installing the drivers now, right?
The thing is, I don't have the original CD that came with the printer...
Does anyone know how I can get this sorted?
I actually went ahead and downloaded this first one http://esupport.epson-europe.com/Pro...qnNYU003D&tc=6 and installed it, but whenever I try to check things—like, say, seeing which ink color I'm running low on—nothing shows up. It just keeps throwing a Communication ERROR.
I can still scan stuff, which is fine, I guess, but I can't print anything because I know a color is missing, I just have no clue which one it is.

Please, if anyone could help me out...

It’s still showing me the exact same thing...
First it says Searching, and then—bam—Communication ERROR.

The scanning part actually works! I can get it done through the Scan Assistant or just by selecting the printer in the control panel. But, I don't know, I still can't figure out which specific color is running low.

I am unsure if this will be of any assistance to you, but perhaps take a look here: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/58580

I was just reading some similar stuff on... I was just looking back through some old threads, and I think I found something that might help with those persistent driver issues we were talking about earlier regarding the printer levels. It’s one of those things where you think you've fixed everything, but then—poof—another error pops up out of nowhere. Anyway, I was digging around, and I stumbled upon this discussion about the different error levels. It’s kind of interesting, actually... I mean, if you look at how these systems are structured, it isn't always straightforward. Sometimes a simple Communication ERROR is just a hiccup, but other times, it feels like the whole setup is fighting you. I guess it really depends on whether you're running Windows 7 or something a bit more recent, though even on newer versions, things can get messy. I remember dealing with my old HP Envy once, and it felt like I was going in circles just trying to get the Scan Assistant to recognize the device. It’s frustrating, right? You spend an hour troubleshooting, thinking you've mastered it, and then the computer starts Searching again like nothing happened. Maybe I'm overthinking it, but there seems to be a pattern to how these errors escalate. If anyone is still struggling with the SX125 or even the older HP Envy models, take a look at these levels. It might give you a better idea of whether you're looking at a quick fix or if you need to pull your hair out a little bit. Just my two cents!

I mean, I've honestly tried everything... like, absolutely everything at my disposal, including... I was just poking around this site—http://inkjetprinterhelp.us/epsonSSC.html—and I thought it might be worth a look for anyone else struggling with their setup. It’s one of those little corners of the internet that actually seems to have some decent info on getting things running smoothly. I guess it could be helpful if you're feeling stuck. Maybe? Anyway, just thought I'd share!

So, what most people have figured out—and I guess I’ve finally come to the same conclusion myself after all this—is that absolutely nothing is working. It’s just... well, it's hopeless. The issue really just lies with the HP Envy itself.

I mean, I guess it’s kind of strange... because everything was working perfectly fine just a little while ago, you know? But then, out of nowhere, it just completely stopped showing the ink levels. It's like, one minute it's there, and the next—poof—nothing. Just totally gone.

I was wondering... does this happen with all those older HP Envy printers when you try to run them on Windows 7? I mean, is it just my luck, or is this some sort of widespread thing? 😲

It seems like you might have skipped installing the specific driver package, or perhaps you installed them one by one like pieces of a puzzle that just don't fit together, leaving the system confused about how to actually talk to the device.
The easiest way to handle this is to just use that installation CD that came in the box—it bundles the driver and the full software suite together, which usually solves everything in one go.
Anything else you’ve tried doing is probably just cluttering things up now.

That error message popping up isn't actually an issue with your ink levels being low; it's more like a breakdown in conversation between the computer and the hardware. Basically, the printer hasn't been properly introduced to the system yet.
As for why those ink levels aren't showing up, that's simply because the management software hasn't been correctly established.

I suspect you didn't install the printer using its specific driver, or perhaps you installed it so haphazardly that even the machine doesn't know what it's supposed to be doing...

That seems like the more logical explanation.
You should have received a CD with the printer containing the full installation suite; just run that and the matter is settled.

She already mentioned she doesn't have a CD...
I'm wondering if this is a common issue with all older printers when paired with Windows 7?

No, I've been using an SX125 with Windows 7 and third-party ink for years without any issues whatsoever.

I had his drivers all set up from the original CD, but then I went ahead and installed some new Windows updates in the meantime, so I had to redo the whole installation process.
I didn't just download them blindly, though—I used the specific link I mentioned in my first post.

So, I guess the only real way out of this mess is to track down that original CD?
Honestly, I have no idea if I'll even be able to find it.

Well, if there isn't a physical disc available, she actually provided a direct download link for it right back in her opening post...

Moving forward... which version of Windows did you select from this menu here... http://prntscr.com/5g4odf versus the one you actually have installed?

And finally... I’m not seeing any color profiles from the last installation, but honestly, it doesn't bother me one bit because using the software suite is such a headache. Once I look at the hard copy and realize the colors aren't quite hitting the mark, I just manually adjust all the settings and call it a day.

The bottom line is this... don't sweat the color accuracy on the screen; you'll see what you're really working with once you check the actual printout...

I went with Windows 7 64-bit.

My real issue is that the printer refuses to print anything at all if even a single color is empty. It's been like that from the very beginning. I guess that's just how this printer was built.

If you find that a specific color is missing, the machine will let you know by stating it’s either empty or running low. However, if you see a Communication ERROR pop up, that signals a completely different kind of headache. It’s a bit like troubleshooting a car engine; if you understand how the ink cartridges function, you can guide someone through repositioning the carriage to swap them out. I always suggest pulling the cartridges one by one and reinserting them to see if that clears things up.

When was the last time you actually sat down to run a print job? I'm just wondering if the ink might have dried up inside the lines or if the print head has become a total mess from sitting idle too long.

Well, you know... it’s hard to say if that printer could be any older than mine, especially since my menu actually shows an "Ink level" option under maintenance for things like nozzle checks.
Go ahead, Robin Hernandez8, just take them one by one and see what happens.
EDIT: Oops... actually, looking at it again, maybe it really could be even older than mine.

Well, I tried taking the cartridges out one at a time, but... nothing. No change at all. It still won't tell me which color is missing or even how much is left in any of them. It just keeps blinking at me, signaling that something is wrong.

And now... well, things are getting a little bit complicated, I guess.
I haven't printed anything in about three months because the printer wouldn't even turn on. So, I ended up updating my windows and I had to grab a new cable, too—turns out the old cable was the reason it wouldn't power up in the first place.

Back when I was using my old windows setup, everything worked fine. It would automatically pop up a notification whenever a color was getting low or empty. Like, right at the start, it would clearly show me which ink was low or gone.

Everything was working perfectly then.

But then that whole mess with the cable happened, and I didn't realize the cable was the culprit until I finally replaced it along with the new windows installation.

And now I'm stuck with this headache.

Honestly... I really have no clue what the root cause is anymore.

Now listen, darling... why don't you try picking up some fresh ink and see if that does the trick? Though, if you ask me, I have a feeling that might not be the only thing causing this headache.

Which specific cable are we talking about here?

I'm not entirely sure how old it is, but it's probably been sitting around for a few years now.

Back in the day, whenever the print quality started acting up or whatever, I'd just head over to the Control Panel, go to Hardware, then Devices and Printers, and find my HP Envy.
You could just right-click on Printing Preferences, hit maintenance, and do whatever you needed to do. It was easy. No big deal at all.

But NOW? If I right-click on Printing Preferences, absolutely nothing happens... I can only choose between "open" or "create shortcut," which isn't exactly helpful, is it?

It was actually a power issue. That's why it wouldn't even turn on in the first place.

Now I'm just sitting here wondering if I should take the plunge and buy all four original ones, or if I should just go with some off-brand copies. Because, gosh, if I shell out all that cash for the genuine stuff and things still don't work right... I think I'd be absolutely livid.😵
