Proposal for forum moderation!

I’m asking all the long-time members here who have noticed that the moderation lately hasn't been exactly up to par to weigh in on whether we should implement some new forum rules.

Two specific additions:

! Anyone actively participating in a discussion thread shouldn't have the authority to moderate that same thread.

The reasoning is pretty simple: a moderator who is part of the debate is inherently biased, and when they run out of actual arguments, they start reaching for the ban hammer, kicking people out, or deleting posts under the guise of "trolling" just to shut down dissent. Eventually, the thread becomes an echo chamber for the moderator's own views rather than a real discussion. You can't force your opinion on everyone by deleting posts and banning users; if you only want to talk to people who agree with you, just say so from the start instead of destroying the whole point of the forum.

2. We should implement a system where users can assign an infraction against a moderator, which carries a certain point value. Once a moderator hits a specific threshold, they automatically lose their moderation privileges for a month. If someone gets suspended from moderating five times, they lose the role permanently.

The logic:

Basically, every user could assign a single infraction per moderation period, provided they include a reason for why it was given. This would significantly raise the bar for quality here, because moderators wouldn't feel entitled to bully people or delete posts without cause just to push their own agendas.

I’d like everyone to speak up individually about these ideas. Even in American politics, we get to vote every four years to hold leaders accountable, so we should be able to remind the mods that this forum exists for the users, and they are simply here to serve us.

I want to hear what the community thinks, and frankly, I’ll welcome the mods to chime in too; if you believe you're doing a great job, then give us the chance to actually evaluate that work.

Of course, I won't go around handing out infractions like some kind of tyrant, but it's obvious that some people earn them through how they conduct themselves.

It isn't right for the moderators to be the only ones grading each other, because at the end of the day, it just looks like an untouchable inner circle that's immune to any kind of criticism.

Even within this one statement, you kind of trip over your own feet. We can't exactly take your word for it, right? Plus, there's the sheer math of it: if you have X times more users than moderators, you'd be collecting penalties faster than you could eat a bag of chips.

And another thing—how on earth would you stop someone from playing the "mod gives user a strike, user immediately retaliates with a strike against the mod" game? It sounds great in theory, but in practice, it's totally impossible to pull off.

That’s a pretty clever way to try and paint moderators as biased, but honestly, it’s not going to fly. Just because a moderator joins a conversation doesn't automatically mean they've lost their objectivity. Moderators have every right to participate in any discussion they want, just like any other member, and they actually have a responsibility to keep an eye on threads to ensure things stay civil. They can always coordinate amongst themselves and decide that one person won't handle a specific thread, but that’s an internal matter for them to work out. At the end of the day, moderators are real people with lives outside the internet, and often, they don't have any other choice but to moderate the very topics they're interested in. Participating in a chat doesn't inherently equal bias, so let's not make that implication—it just isn't how the rules work.

My reasoning:

Basically, every user could issue just one infraction per moderator during a single moderation term. We’d also need to require a reason for every infraction issued. I really think this would massively improve the quality of the forum, because moderators wouldn't feel like they could just force their opinions on everyone by handing out warnings or deleting posts without a valid cause.

That just wouldn't work in the real world. Our community has all sorts of different personalities, and a small handful of vindictive users would absolutely flood the moderators with fake infractions in no time. We have a hierarchy for a reason; this forum isn't a direct democracy.
