I found that pretty interesting too, so I did a quick search on
Horses get less than three hours of sleep a day, but they don't do it all at once. It’s more like several short bursts lasting anywhere from 3 to 6 minutes. They actually only lie down for about two hours total. They mostly sleep standing up because it's just easier for them. The thing is, a horse uses more energy while lying down than when it's standing. When they lie down, their heavy body puts a massive amount of pressure on them, especially regarding their chest, lungs, and heart. Maintaining circulation and breathing requires more energy in that position than when the horse is upright. Plus, staying balanced is easy when you have four legs instead of two, I guess.
