Quick question about avatars

I wasn't quite sure who to ask about this, so I figured I'd just give it a shot here...
Is there some kind of trick to setting an avatar? Because I can't seem to get mine to show up.
I followed all the steps exactly as they were laid out, but for some reason, it’s still not working.

The image format is kind of a mess, honestly.
I mean, just open it up in Paint or something, then hit file-save as and pick .jpg from the dropdown before you save it.
That should probably do the trick...
