Is it acceptable to offer an opinion based on their post, provided the answer is a "yes"?

Should such a question be ignored, or should one lie?

The rules state we shouldn't write things we wouldn't want written about ourselves.

As someone who values honest, reasoned answers to my own questions... that is exactly how I operate.
I provide an honest response to a specific question after laying out the reasoning first.
That is what I expect from others—and it is how I conduct myself.

If a user didn't actually want an answer, they wouldn't have asked the question... or would they?

Honestly? I think the question is just rhetorical at this point. It’s basically like rubbing salt in an open wound, isn't it? 🙂

Look, I am a moderator, alright? I wouldn't just hand out a ban just because someone says "yeah." That’s not how this works. It’s about the whole vibe of the post, you know? Personally, I think what they said was pretty rude, but is it actually against the rules? Not really. So, no penalty.

Look, I'm not a mod or anything, so... whatever. But from what I can see, nobody even bothered to slap you with a penalty.

I mean, look, if someone drops two or three really aggressive posts aimed at the same person? Yeah, that’s a whole different story. That's when it starts looking intentional, right? 😉

I honestly don't see the point in starting new threads on Reddit, Quora, or even Yelp. People over there are just itching to tear apart whoever starts a conversation. Suddenly, everyone is a licensed psychologist, a seasoned expert on life, or some hyper-liberal 🙂

That’s why I usually steer clear of those subreddits. If someone is looking for help and I've been through something similar, I’ll try to offer advice instead of just attacking the person asking. If I haven't lived it, I won't comment. I understand "well-intentioned" advice, but this attitude of "I took a five-minute IQ test online and now I'm a genius, so let me lecture everyone" is beyond me. I wasn't calling you out, quietstag11, this is just my observation regarding the crowd on those forums.

Your experience is one thing, but mine couldn't be more different.
I actually received proper guidance... back in the day. Or rather, I got plenty of conflicting advice, but I managed to make sense of it all and find my way.
Still, the sheer volume of DMs I get suggests I’m doing something right. 🙂
