I'm not even sure a real conversation is possible when things get this heated. Honestly, hitting the ignore button is perfectly fine by me... I won't mind being lumped in with them.

True, but you're actually the one creating the conflict here—essentially resorting to ad hominem attacks against your interlocutor.
Frankly, it's just poor etiquette on your part.
If you have no intention of engaging in a debate with someone, then don't bring them up at all.
"Following" someone around just to nitpick their character—whether those traits are real or imagined—runs contrary to standard forum rules.
If you spot a post that actually violates the guidelines, simply report it properly.
That is how reasonable people handle these things.
