Roommates and Regrets

I’m picking up where I left off in that previous thread—which, for some reason, got shut down. Should this have been moved over to the psychology subforum? Honestly, I’ve never quite wrapped my head around how the moderation here works, but I’ll try to calmly lay out the rest of what I couldn't say there...

So, here's the deal: I took in a girl who just turned twenty, and we’re living in a tiny apartment together. I am seriously torn right now between whether I should kick her out, move out myself, or just somehow push her away from my life entirely.

She came from a domestic violence shelter, so she’s dealt with some heavy family stuff. Initially, I felt nothing but sympathy for her, but lately, it feels like life is just throwing one shock after another at me. First, her parents thought she’d committed suicide and had the police showing up at my door, then she started bringing guys back to the apartment... now I’m getting the distinct impression she isn't just using these guys, she's using me too, treating me like some sort of surrogate mother. After I started that last thread, an older woman from next door actually knocked on my door and lectured me, saying I need to look out for the kid, that she's basically still a child, that I should help her get a job and whatnot... Look, I *do* all that, but I’m just so frustrated. I come home and there’s some guy sitting on my bed—someone she considers just another "friend"—and they’re practically making out right in front of me, only for someone else to show up the very next day...

I’ve already told her straight up: no guests. But does she listen? Not even a little. To make matters worse, the girl can't even remember my name, which is pretty ridiculous considering it’s a super common American name. Sometimes I genuinely wonder if something is wrong with her, like, is her head actually okay? And this whole thing with the older guys she hangs out with is terrifying; one of them has a real temper and gets aggressive. I’m honestly scared she’s going to end up a victim of more violence or something even worse.

The guilt is eating at me. Part of me knows I need to get out, but then I start questioning if that’s the right thing to do. Should I wait until she gets her first paycheck to see if she’s actually exploiting people or if she’s just broke? But deep down, my gut is screaming at me to just run for the hills. My perfumes are disappearing, my makeup is being used, my food is being eaten... she’s lounging on my bed and using my towels... I really can't take it anymore.

I have this nagging feeling that there might be something deeper going on with her, like all of this can't just be a series of coincidences...

Gut feelings don't lie. Look, if it's about splitting the bills, fine. But if there isn't even a real crisis, why bring some random person into such a tiny living space year after year? Sharing private space when it's absolutely necessary is one thing, but doing it when you don't have to? Who actually suggested that she should play "mom" to someone like that... at that age? There are plenty of better ways to live without constantly adding drama to your life. You know, find actual hobbies or something? It’s totally possible that things with the kid are indeed a little messy...

So, would you actually want to be a mother? Or maybe you just have no interest in being pregnant?

And why on earth would you go and do that? Like, actually take her in?

I suppose she’s just trying to fill some sort of void in her life or whatever, though honestly, she needs help just as much as that kid does. I mean, look at the situation—your daughter is bringing all sorts of sketchy characters into the house, which puts you right in the line of fire for an assault or something equally dangerous. If I were anyone else, even a perfectly normal person, I would have kicked that girl out ages ago. What’s next on the agenda? You’re lying there in bed, minding your own business scrolling through some forums, and suddenly your daughter is right there next to you, hooking up with some random guy. Are you going to be the one helping them hide their stash of cocaine too? Because quite frankly, you might end up behind bars when the police show up with a search warrant and find drugs or stolen property in the house, leaving you to explain to a judge that you were "just trying to help" your daughter. Seriously, honey, get that kid out of your house immediately.🙄

Honestly, she’s way out of your league—you just don't have the tools, the bandwidth, or the capacity to actually be there for her, even if you wanted to. It’d probably be best to just step back and let her navigate things on her own. Sorry if that feels like a dig...

Besides, if you're looking for a real opinion, you shouldn't be hanging out in those subreddits where everyone is just competing to see who can act the most alpha.

So, am I correct in assuming we aren't one of those "ego-trip" forums?

Actually, I think we’re one of the few corners of the internet where you can actually bring a real problem to the table.

Stop playing the hero.
You don't have that kind of power.
Based on what you said, this girl has issues she needs to deal with herself—it’s not your job to fix them for her. Give her some direction, offer support, but set some damn boundaries.

Look, you aren't obligated to save the world—or even the people drowning in it—especially when they’re busy driving you absolutely insane. Honestly? People like that just play dirty by trying to guilt-trip everyone else. Just kick them to the curb and get some sleep without the stress—maybe then they'll realize they need a better strategy and remember who they messed with next time.

Two old proverbs for you:

1. Help a poor soul just to embarrass yourself
2. If you play with kids, you're bound to end up with wet pants

...plus there's that thing about how you attract what you are😉

Who picked this little girl to be her roommate? Saint Peter?

Well, us readers are wondering the exact same thing about you—like, who did you pick to end up in this mess? At least I'm asking.☕

The headline is pure clickbait—this isn't some roommate drama, it’s your own humanitarian project. As for why you're doing it, well, I guess that's something only you can answer.

Hmm, now there’s an interesting question.🍿 Have you actually concluded that Amber is a lesbian just by looking at her avatar, or do you happen to have some actual, reliable intel on the matter?

I’ve been following her threads over on the other subforums. I actually went down the rabbit hole and clicked that link she posted—you know, the one with the rubber dolls that apparently get her going. Now I’m left wondering if a simple prayer to two saints will cover my sins, or if I’ll need to beat three levels of Super Mario just to balance out the karma. ☕

Lord have mercy, someone call an ambulance! The girl should have been a living, breathing rubber doll capable of handling her needs, instead of dragging every random guy she can lay eyes on into this mess—it is absolutely revolting!!!!!!

Look, I didn't choose her. We're staying in corporate housing provided by the company. It’s literally just assigning people in pairs at random, whether they're arriving for the first time or getting moved from their old roommates.
