Once, while I was in San Francisco, instead of actually looking at the local girls, I spent the whole time staring at my phone, naturally...
I met this girl from New York City. I can't even recall her name anymore... It was June 24th, 2004. Hard to believe. Anyway, I fell into this pathetic, illusory state of euphoria. I thought she would somehow kill my fear and my shame. We spent the entire day texting. I was so happy. "Do you ever feel lonely? Would you want to kiss?" That kind of thing, she asked. And then the strangest part—I fell asleep and dreamed about her, even though we had never actually met. I dreamed of kissing her...
On June 25th, I bought a prepaid phone card for this girl I’d never seen... More texting. Then she ran out of minutes, but she promised she’d reach out and that we’d meet up once I got back to New York City.
By July 1st, I was back in New York City, sending messages, but she never replied again.
It wasn't that I was heartbroken... Summer started and I slowly drifted away from it... Only that dream remains, a tragicomic memory...
Later on, I turned down a few girls myself, and it felt good. I rejected them because they were meant for someone else.
