Hey everyone!
My mom runs an accounting firm and has decided it’s time to move away from using a laptop as a makeshift server. Right now, she works alongside a colleague, and they just rely on her laptop—which has a 7th gen i5 and 8GB of RAM—to handle everything, and honestly, it performs perfectly fine. An IT services company gave her a quote to put together a dedicated server setup for about $18,000.
The reality is, she just needs a system that can reliably support three workstations, since she’s planning to hire a third employee soon.
To me, that $18k price tag feels a bit excessive. They told her this setup would allow for up to 10 simultaneous connections, which is way more than she needs right now—she could easily upgrade the hardware later if the business grows. They also mentioned she could try connecting one more workstation to the current laptop, but warned the whole thing wouldn't be stable.
I figured I’d check in here to see what you all think about this, and if anyone could suggest a configuration that would work as a reliable server for three connected PCs. If I’ve left out any crucial details, please let me know.
Here is the exact spec list they quoted for the $18k:
-DELL Precision SERVER
-Intel Xeon quad Core E5-1225v5
-Crucial MEM 8 GB DDR4-2400 MHz UDIMM
-Microsoft Windows Server 2016 Essentials
-4x Samsung 860 Evo 250GB 2.5" SSD
-APC UPS 2000VA/1200W
-Windows XP/VS Terminal Server Standard 3 connections per server
-2x External 3.5-inch enclosure
Thanks in advance.
I thought about posting this in the IT Help section, but I realized most people tend to ask these kinds of questions here anyway.
