Is there any chance a medication could actually do the exact opposite of what it’s supposed to do?

Last night, around 9 PM, I decided—for the first time ever—to take something to help me sleep. I’ve been dealing with this chronic sleep deprivation lately and I am just totally wiped out...
I'm super stressed and my internal clock is basically non-existent right now, so I figured, hey, maybe I can finally get some rest.😁
But then...
suddenly, at 3 in the morning, here I am...
a) wide awake, fully conscious
b) tapping my foot like crazy (even my dog was staring at me weirdly)—and I'm not even someone who taps their fingers on tables or fidgets like that, I swear...
I hadn't touched any coffee since 3 PM, no tea either, and I haven't had a single drink in over two weeks...
