I have to say, the movie was a massive letdown. The plot felt totally hollow and just didn't hold water, though I'm not really sure why I walked in expecting anything more than that. Adam Sandler and Penélope Cruz were completely wasted here.

It’s worth a watch, sure, but nothing more. You watch it, you move on, and that's that. It’s no better than anything else out there. I never really understood why everyone calls this movie so "good."

I never really grasped why people call this movie "good."

It probably comes down to the fact that, just like any other film, you need some level of connection to a character—or at least a situation that feels familiar or relatable.

It caught me off guard, though. Since this was my "three-quarters better" rental, I ended up surprised by how much of a comedy the first half actually is... some of the dialogue reminded me of those early years we spent together... specifically that whole clash between being a rigid "structuralist" and the "it’s not that big of a deal" mindset. We both found ourselves laughing...

Then you hit that second dramatic half which, I'll admit, feels a little dragged out. But then I find myself focusing more on Penélope Cruz who is just... well... stunning... which makes getting through the rest of the film a lot easier.

Though I have to say, she did a great job in certain spots where words weren't enough; she’d step in with these intense gestures—which we can just chalk up to that vibrant Latin influence—and she'd pretty much command the entire scene.

I’ve actually got this thing on Blu-ray. It isn't even that bad since it's basically just a "parody of a parody," you know? And honestly, that scene where they try to do sex without actually doing any sex... 🙂

Honestly, I don't find him funny at all, nor is he particularly interesting; to me, his whole vibe is just completely mediocre...

I find myself agreeing regarding Sandler, though it seems the executives at the major studios operate under the delusion that this master of toilet humor is some kind of indispensable titan whose mere presence guarantees a box office windfall. While the film itself is excellent, wouldn't it have been even stronger had he stayed away? Nevertheless, James L. Brooks did oversee the production of The Simpsons. The most poignant moment occurs when they declare him one of the finest chefs in the country, only for him to return home from work and simply assemble a sandwich for dinner. Tea Leoni is truly remarkable.

Great movie, but honestly, the sandwich was even better! 🙂

That bathroom scene where Adam Sandler mistakes Teo Leoni for a girl—man, that perfectly nails the whole "men vs. women" brain thing. Honestly, James L. Brooks just doesn't miss.

Man, I am seriously blown away by how good this movie actually was! I ended up catching it during one of those "shotgun screenings" where you basically feel forced to watch it, but honestly? After just fifteen minutes, I was totally hooked and having a blast. I don't know if I’d ever have the guts to direct something this heavy—it's such a total tear-jerker—but the filmmaker absolutely nailed it without ever feeling condescending or patronizing to the audience. I'm legitimately impressed.
