Speaker system recommendations?

I’m looking for some advice on setting up a multi-speaker system! My vision is to have one main hub—maybe a solid soundbar—wired directly to my TV, paired with about 4 or 5 wireless satellite speakers scattered throughout the apartment. It would be a total dream if the system allowed me to add more speakers down the road without everything breaking, though I don't need that too badly.
The absolute dealbreaker for me, though, is control. I really need to be able to manage the entire setup wirelessly from my laptop (I jump between my Macbook Air, Windows, and iOS devices constantly!) and have the option to toggle individual speakers on or off as needed. Most of the time, this is going to be for listening to music, with the occasional movie thrown in here and there, but I'm not exactly a hardcore cinephile or anything. Any suggestions?

Bose and Sonos both churn out wireless speakers, though naturally, each one will set you back a few hundred bucks if you're looking at the premium stuff. If you aren't exactly itching to empty your savings account, there are plenty of much more affordable solutions out there—honestly, why not just take a stroll through a Target or a Best Buy and see what catches your eye? Besides, most decent options these days come with AirPlay and DLNA support right out of the box anyway.
