Ten days ago, my cousin had a motorcycle accident and suffered spinal injuries. He underwent surgery the same day at the Mayo Clinic on Drašković, and they said the procedure was a complete success. We were told five vertebrae were fractured—two severe ones and three minor ones. By some miracle, his spinal cord remains undamaged, or so we have been informed. However, even ten days later, he cannot move his legs. He can feel touch and warmth, but he also experiences tingling and numbness. The doctors haven't given us much detail beyond saying recovery will be a long road. He is only 14 and is an incredibly active athlete.
I have a few specific questions:
1. Is it normal for him to still be unable to move his legs ten days after the operation?
2. If the spinal cord isn't damaged, why is it taking so long for him to regain movement (is this expected), and is there a chance for a full recovery given the lack of cord damage?
3. Given his age, how long does it typically take for the bones to heal?
4. Once his wound is fully healed, he should start physical therapy at a place like the Mayo Clinic wellness centers. Would those facilities be beneficial for him?
Please help us with these answers. We are deeply worried; this all happened so suddenly, and we are struggling with such limited information. I have a thousand more questions...😕
Thank you in advance.
