Microfracture surgery of the lateral femoral condyle
Greetings, everyone.
This is my first time posting here. There are simply too many threads to catch up on, even though I noticed some discussion regarding my specific issue. I would be very grateful if anyone could spare a moment to share their perspective on my situation.
On November 18th of last year, I underwent my first surgery at Mayo Clinic (performed by Dr. Smith). My MRI diagnosis revealed a horizontal tear of the anterior horn and a radial tear of the lateral meniscus body extending to the inferior surface. Additionally, there were cartilage fissures on the medial condyle and trochlea of the femur, as well as both patellar facets (chondromalacia, Grade 1B to 2).
During that initial procedure, a subtotal lateral meniscectomy was performed.
Following that surgery, the real struggles began. I dealt with constant swelling, though I wasn't experiencing pain. I attempted to return to training—specifically soccer—after completing a high-quality rehabilitation program, but the swelling simply refused to subside.
Seeking a second opinion, I underwent a second surgery on March 21st with Professor Hasbro, where microfractures of the lateral femoral condyle were performed. The prescribed recovery plan is as follows: six weeks on crutches, followed by six weeks of rehabilitation, with the expectation of returning to sports after those twelve weeks. I am reaching out to ask about your experiences with this or similar procedures. Tomorrow marks three weeks since my surgery, and I am wondering how long you experienced swelling post-op, as mine persists (though it has decreased slightly since the procedure). Furthermore, what is the likelihood of damaging these microfractures? A few days ago, I tripped on some stairs and put almost my full weight on that leg, despite being told to limit weight-bearing to about 10–22 lbs during the first few weeks.
Is this level of swelling considered normal?
To be honest, I am becoming quite mentally exhausted by this knee. Since the first surgery, the persistent swelling has been draining. While there isn't significant pain (aside from the occasional sensation one might expect after such a procedure), the fact that I live for my sport makes my anxiety grow with each passing day. Perhaps I am overthinking things, but the frustration is real.
Therefore, I kindly ask for any advice or guidance you might be able to offer.
Thank you in advance.
