On top of that, he's sipping absinthe and getting lost in opium

The movie itself? Eh, it was just okay.
The vibe is killer and it looks absolutely gorgeous, but man, they totally trashed it with all those cheap twists and turns.

Honestly, watching him pass out from the absinthe might be the best part of the whole thing.
I'm just not that into Depp myself.

The movie is fine—it's basically chamomile tea for your brain if you just want to zone out for a bit. But if you actually want something with some teeth, go read the comic instead.

While the film does a lovely job capturing the visual essence of Victorian England, I feel the story itself is somewhat mediocre. Perhaps it’s just because audiences might be getting a bit tired of all the mystery and debunking surrounding Trbosjek! The acting is decent enough, though I don't think anyone's performance really sticks with you after the credits roll.

If you actually want the real story, go check out his victim list on Wikipedia—WARNING: you aren't going to sleep tonight after reading that stuff.

I think I last saw this maybe ten years ago, if my memory serves me right. Honestly? It’s a solid flick. It’s got just the right amount of grit and morbidity to keep things interesting.
I’ve always had a soft spot for that whole dark Victorian/Gothic vibe—it hits the same way American dark noir does.
My only real gripe is how stupidly they handled the end when Inspector Abberline dies...
