I’m dealing with a sudden increase in body hair. I’ve always had some light, thin hair on my arms—nothing major, likely just 😁 genetics—and a little on my stomach, but I usually just waxed every four weeks. To give you some context, I’ve always been naturally thin. However, this past fall, I lost about 6 or 7 pounds due to intense stress and a period of depression. It wasn't intentional, but those few pounds pushed me straight into being underweight 😢. Then, one day, I notice fine hairs appearing on my breasts. Looking closer, the hair on my upper arms seems longer, there's more on my stomach, and now even my thighs—where I’ve never had hair before—are covered. Honestly, it terrified me. 😲 Naturally, I went to see everyone. I saw endocrinologists and gynecologists, ran blood panels, the whole works. Everything came back normal; my hormones are fine, no signs of PCOS, blood work is perfect. But apparently, I misread the situation. It turns out I'm experiencing symptoms associated with anorexia—specifically lanugo hair, which is the body's way of trying to trap heat because it's losing too much energy. It's unsettling. 😢 😢 Supposedly, this should resolve once I gain weight back. I am trying, but college stress has already caused me to drop weight again. I have always struggled to put on weight; my weight has been practically stagnant my entire life.
Has anyone else experienced this or heard anything about it?
I’ve scoured the internet and consulted doctors, but I find it hard to wrap my head around the fact that a month of high stress and losing a few pounds could trigger this, especially since I don't consider myself an anorexic.
Also, does anyone know if psychological factors play a role? I heard from a nurse at an endocrinology clinic that mental state can actually influence hair growth. 😲 😕
It’s a strange thing to be thinking about, this whole hair issue... 😉
A bit of unsolicited advice to close: try not to let the small stuff stress you out to the point of malnutrition. You might just end up growing extra hair. 🙂 😢

I’ve got chest hair too, black stuff. Plus, I’m carrying a few extra pounds above my goal weight. But honestly? My health markers are perfect, and I don't let it get to me at all. It’s just genetics.

Honestly, after about $133 hours of laser hair removal, you can just consider the whole thing handled forever. I really don't see why anyone would think that's a complicated process. 🙂

If you’re dealing with a lot of excess hair, I suspect there might be some kind of hormonal imbalance at play... honestly, there are countless women out there facing the exact same thing, whether it’s facial hair or just unwanted growth on the chest. I’d suggest checking in with a doctor to see what they have to say about it. I mean, if it's tied to a specific condition, you might even be able to get laser treatment covered by your insurance through a clinic...
