Super (2010)

Following "Kick-Ass" and "Defendor," we’ve got another flick about regular people trying to play superhero and failing miserably. It’s a dark comedy/drama from director and writer James Gunn, the guy behind the 2006 horror funhouse "Slither." This is an indie production with a tiny $2 million budget, but James Gunn managed to pull together a seriously impressive cast. We're talking Elliot Page, Liv Tyler, Kevin Bacon, Michael Rooker, Gregg Henry, Nathan Fillion, and Rainn Wilson leading the pack. The film already hit the Sundance Film Festival and crushed it with critics! No word yet on when it hits theaters, but IFC Midnight has already picked up the distribution rights, so we should hear something soon. There isn't a public trailer out just yet, but anyone who caught a sneak peek at San Diego Comic-Con is raving about it. CLIP - Crimson Bolt & Boltie

PLOT

After his wife Sarah Tyler hooks up with a smooth-talking drug dealer named Jacques, Frank transforms himself into the superhero "The Crimson Bolt". Then with The Help of a trusty wrench, Frank wages a one-man war on crime. Libby Page, a local comic book store employee, transforms herself into a superhero named "Boltie" and becomes Frank's sidekick. The Two then team up to taka Jacques down.

The release date for the limited theatrical run is set for April 8

super will be opening on April 1st, 2011. That first week WE will be in only Los Angeles and New York. However, on the following week, April 8, 2011, WE will be in fifteen to twenty of The twenty-five biggest markets in The United States. Around that same time, we will also be available on VOD. And, after that, only God knows – perhaps more cities, perhaps not. It depends a lot on what you guys demand and want. I know I’m going to get questions from many of you asking if your city is going to be included on the April 8th open – the answer is “I don’t know.” The other cities haven’t been decided yet. So if you want it in your city go out there and tell your local theater you want super!

🤦 You probably shouldn't have said that—I mean, who knows what'll actually happen by then... Anyway, Ellen Page is one of those rare actresses who actually blew me away 😁 Proof that you don't need to be busty, curvy, or stripping in every single movie to be good 🤣 Either way, I can't wait...

Honestly, this was such a bizarre flick about some guy who completely loses his mind because his wife ran off with someone else, and then he decides to become this super hero who just goes around pummeling people in the streets. It’s honestly unsettling; the guy belongs in a psych ward, and as for the movie itself... frankly, I think it’s better if they had just left it unmade.

Honestly, I can't see Kick-Ass being anything other than a total disaster for me, especially when you realize it stars Rainn Wilson—who is basically the biggest nutcase from The Office—alongside the legendary Kevin Bacon. How is that even supposed to work?

You can't help but compare it to Kick-Ass. While Kick-Ass is fun and cool, it's honestly pretty shallow and easy to forget. Super is a way better movie, though it's definitely not for everyone. It’s got some bizarrely funny moments mixed with tons of brutal, intense action. But man, the characters have so much more depth.

Rainn Wilson is great, but Ellen Page was my favorite. She's totally awesome, and honestly, she looks pretty hot in that costume... I don't know the last time a movie actress actually did that for me. 😁

Gotta highlight two scenes. First one is when the lead thinks he's having a vision from Bog and it's like his brain is being touched. Pretty weird, but so good. The second one is near the end—can't spoil it, but it's totally unexpected and super jarring. I think I actually yelled Holy shit while watching...

Yeah, Kevin Bacon was really good too.

Pretty solid flick. Actually unexpectedly good because I was expecting something else entirely. 8/10

I actually liked Kick-Ass quite a bit, probably because my expectations were low to begin with.

I gave up on Defendor after just 15 minutes.

And I ditched Super after 30. Is it even worth sticking it out...?

Honestly, this movie was garbage. I really expected way more from it, but the ending just left me totally disappointed 😢. I actually thought it was going to be super when I saw Ellen Page and that guy from The Office in the cast, but man, what a disaster. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

Kick-Ass is about a guy who tries to be a super hero even though he isn't, and then somehow actually becomes one.

But when does he actually become a hero? He spends the entire movie getting absolutely wrecked. I mean, even McLovin beats the hell out of him by the end.

You've got a point there... that's why Kick-Ass needs someone like Hit-Girl to balance things out—this little girl who can carry a 50-pound mattress without breaking a sweat. But even she goes overboard, killing way too many people and somehow surviving an endless cycle of beatings, falls, and gunshot wounds. She’s the actual hero here.

But you won't find anyone like that in the Superman movies.
