The Crazies (2010) - a remake of Romero's horror/sci-fi flick about the residents of a small town in Kansas who start acting "strange" after an unknown toxin contaminates the local water supply.

The premise sounds pretty cliché, but the movie actually landed well with both audiences and critics. Anyone here seen it? 🙂

I guess it’s a little early to be dropping full reviews since the movie just hit theaters, but let's leave this thread up—it'll probably pick up some steam eventually... 🙂 Honestly, I rewatched Romero's original a few days ago and it just didn't quite click for me—don't get me wrong, there are some solid scenes in there, but the whole thing felt kind of underwhelming overall...

Threads used to pop up way before any movie actually hit theaters, so here we are. I’ll just leave this here and wait for the comments to roll in. 🙂
I haven't actually seen the original version, but based on some of the feedback I've been reading, apparently the remake managed to outdo it in terms of sheer quality. 🤷

Honestly, it wasn't even that hard to top the original—the movie is pretty "dense," if that's the right word... it’s not exactly straightforward, almost feels like a piece of anti-government propaganda at times, all wrapped up in this story about an "occupation" of a small town. Plus, some parts can be a real drag. From what I could gather, they were working with a tiny budget, which shows in certain key scenes where the lack of explanation just leaves you with a total WTF feeling. For me personally, it’s definitely one of Romero's weaker efforts, though maybe it's worth checking out before the remake just to get the vibe right...

The trailers look killer—I mean, they added so much pacing compared to the original foundation that modern audiences probably won't have much to complain about there. I've also been reading around that it's starting to pull some decent reviews (though it's a bit silly how people are reviewing it before it even hits wide release), so I'm holding my breath for now... just waiting for a solid torrent upload so we can actually talk about it properly. 😬

Just finished watching. Honestly? I’m kind of floored—everything about this movie works way better than I ever expected... it actually manages to outdo the original in pretty much every way. The story feels tight and complete, too. They avoided all that annoying political preaching and system-critique nonsense you see everywhere nowadays—there's just one tiny beat where it hints at how Americans tend to start shooting before they even bother asking questions, but that's about it. The tension is built so well, and instead of relying on cheap jump scares, it leans heavily into the atmosphere... though don't get me wrong, there's plenty of blood. It just flows perfectly. The pacing never drags, which is the real kicker, even during those moments where the characters get a bit sentimental or emotional. And the acting? Top notch. A seriously solid remake... easily one of the best...

Honestly, everyone I've chatted with lately has been absolutely raving about this movie, and since I finally tracked down a high-quality DVDrip, I might actually get to sit down and watch it as early as tomorrow—so stay tuned, because I'll definitely be back to drop my thoughts once I'm done!

Romero's original actually holds up. That final half hour is even somewhat intriguing, but as a complete package? It’s incredibly sloppy and feels totally amateurish. Even if the directing isn't bad, the editing absolutely kills the vibe, leaving the whole thing—both the story and the execution—looking like a disorganized mess. Plus, there's an endless barrage of dialogue where everyone just constantly interrupts one another, which is just plain irritating.

I mean, come on, not every Romero flick can hit the heights of "Dawn of the Dead," but this one? It’s just... I don't even know. Is it horror? A thriller? A drama? Satire? It refuses to settle into a genre, so it ends up feeling like it's trying to be everything and nothing all at once...

As for this remake, I was actually pretty into it for the first thirty minutes. Everything felt snappy and well-paced, especially with how quickly they brought the military into the mix—it was a dynamic, gripping start. But things really start to stall when (don't ask me how) the sheriff escapes the "camp" and heads back to town to find his wife. Honestly, from that point on, the movie just drags. I think the biggest Achilles' heel here is that "The Crazies" themselves aren't active enough. Maybe I was expecting more of a classic zombie atmosphere packed with high-octane action and spectacle, but the attacks here are far too limited and infrequent. It's a shame because the film showed promise; Eisner did a great job with the visual concept, if only the writers had done their jobs better... After all, Ray Wright and Scott Kosar specialize in writing remakes—they're the minds behind films like Pulse, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and The Amityville Horror.

One of those rare films I couldn't bring myself to finish, no matter how hard I tried. 👎

So, I just wrapped watching this one, and honestly, I’ve got mixed feelings—I definitely enjoyed what I saw, but there were a few things that rubbed me the wrong way, so let's dive into it.

Overall, the movie is actually pretty solid. First off, the acting was great, and I really appreciated that they didn't just rely on cheap jump scares or constant "boo!" moments; instead, they leaned heavily into building this thick, creepy atmosphere, which was executed perfectly and really got under my skin. Even though I've seen my fair share of movies in this genre, I still found myself totally sucked in, especially since this one actually holds up better than most of its competitors.

Where I did run into issues, though, is that the pacing felt super rushed in certain spots. Like, the setup and the whole introduction of the military presence happened way too fast? It felt like they were in such a hurry to get to the point that I can't help but think if the movie had been at least 30 minutes longer, it would have been significantly better. Another thing that felt unfinished to me was how quickly they breezed through some of the creepier sequences. Not all of them, obviously, but take that scene where they grab the truck—that could have lingered a bit longer to really let the tension build, you know? Still, it wasn't a total disaster even with the rushing.

The rating I'm giving it is a 6/10.

@Donna Gray4, did you even see the movie? This looks like an observation copied straight from Horrorhr.
By the way, for me, the film was just o. k. I wasn't expecting a massive blockbuster from the jump, so it actually surprised me in a good way. It wasn't bad at all.

Look, there are tons of movies with this exact premise out there. I’m a fan of the genre, so I went in expecting something actually engaging, on par with the others I've seen. Honestly? I was disappointed. The plot is dull and lacks any real momentum. Just when things should be ramping up, it gets sluggish. It feels more like a lullaby than a thriller. I didn't even finish it—stopped about two-thirds of the way through.

The first thirty minutes actually held some promise, but then the whole thing just spiraled into a collection of tired clichés, topped off with some truly abysmal acting and characters making decisions so brainless they practically invite plot holes.
I don't regret seeing this on the big screen—I think catching it in a theater was the right call—but I really went in hoping it might rise above the usual sludge you see in this genre. Sadly, it didn't.

Yeah, I'm with you... the acting is fine, whatever... but the characters? Their choices are straight-up moronic. Happens in like 70% of movies these days...😁..

I finally sat down and watched it, and I have to say, it wasn't half bad at all. I'd probably give it a solid 9/10, if I'm being honest.

I’m having a truly terrible time with this one. It is incredibly rare for me to actually walk out of a movie, but I just couldn't take it anymore. After barely an hour of sitting there, I finally gave up. It is simply bad...

Just watched it, and honestly? It was kind of a letdown. It’s just one "shocking" moment after another that's supposed to creep you out, but everything feels so played out and cliché ☕

It’s predictable and drags in spots, but hey, there are plenty of much worse movies out there. So if you’re bored and nothing else is on, I guess it's fine to have on in the background... I'd give it a solid 5/10

As far as I can remember, the original was way better—way more unhinged

I mean, the movie was o. k. It doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel or bring anything groundbreaking to the table, but it’s definitely fun and keeps you on the edge of your seat... 7/10
