Thirteen

Has anyone seen the movie "Thirteen"? I just watched it recently and I was absolutely blown away!!

I went in totally blind with zero expectations. A friend lent it to me just to kill some time. And then... wow. Honestly, one of the best films I've ever seen.
Just a heads up: I wouldn't recommend this for kids under 10.

I watched this one and I was honestly floored—they captured that awkward late-puberty phase so realistically. My only gripe is how the female lead went from being such a perfect little teacher's pet at the start to, well, BAM! Suddenly she's all about the partying, smoking, and piercings... kind of like how Anakin turned to the dark side! 😁
But man, the movie is genuinely great—I actually have it on DVD! 👍

The movie is great.

Why do you think the beginning is stupid? That's actually what gives the whole film its purpose. It shows how a girl falls in with the wrong crowd and slowly spirals into addiction and ruin. I personally know a girl who went through the exact same thing. The film is completely realistic. There’s no sugarcoating, and that’s honestly the best part about it.

I'm not saying it's a bad topic, I just think they rushed her descent into a bad crowd a bit too quickly...

How could I not? All my friends are basically counting down the minutes until the scenes where those two finally "get to it." I assume it’s the same for pretty much every other guy out there... 😉

It’s a fair question. I was thinking about my old classmates and friends, but honestly, my boyfriend would probably react the exact same way—he hasn't even seen the movie yet.

Trust me, it’s a solid pick for a movie night together... I’m not saying you should try to act like those two or mimic what they're up to (👋), but if you're just stuck at home with nothing to do? Just watch it! 👍

Holly Hunter is incredible🙂. The movie works—it really nails that whole teenage rebellion vibe, and honestly, those feelings are way too easy to relate to. It does get a bit brutal in spots (that "hit me" sequence 😲 😁), but I guess some people think that’s just how reality looks, so whatever, let them have their 😉
. Maybe Americans are a step ahead of us in some ways, but I can't help feeling the title should have been something like *Fifteen* or something along those lines 😁. They cast older actresses, which is weird because when you're that age, even a two-year gap feels like an eternity.

I don't know... the movie just felt so unrealistic to me—maybe because I never really experienced being a young girl myself... 🙂

The film is great. It’s shot with a gritty realism that hits hard, and all three leads are phenomenal—especially that rebellious teenager who also penned the script. Great dialogue throughout; honestly, it’s a perfect 5. Sure, we've seen this theme before, but never handled quite like this. It’s painfully raw.👍

I gotta say, I was a little bummed out by how everything just wraps up way too fast at the end.
Honestly though, the movie itself is totally worth watching.👍

It’s packed with clichés—and honestly, it fails at being "realistic" precisely because it tries way too hard to be one... if you catch my drift.

But all things considered, it was a VERY entertaining ninety minutes featuring two absolute Hollywood rising stars.
My favorite part? That scene where they’re working their charms on the neighbor.😍

On that point, I completely agree. They don't act thirteen, nor do they look the part. Take the lead actress at the start of the film: okay, she passes. The nerd, the mommy's girl, the age-appropriate clothing.....

But then you have the typical "wild girl" in school who’s already deep into alcohol and drugs, dressing like a total provocateur (no offense to anyone who dresses like that).... Honestly, even fifteen would be too young. Seventeen would be just right....

I watched it quite some time ago.
It’s a solid piece of filmmaking, though while I was watching it—and even as the credits rolled—I couldn't shake this nagging sensation that I had seen something remarkably similar before.
Kill me now, I can't quite put my finger on it, but a movie like this definitely exists out there somewhere.
It follows a very similar blueprint.
Still, it’s a good film.
It feels "cerebral."

With all due respect, I really expected a bit more from this movie, especially given how much hype it generated. Unfortunately, the pacing feels a little too slow for me, perhaps because those kinds of situations often look far less compelling in real life than they do in a film like "Thirteen."

Not bad, though.

It’s pretty mediocre. Just the usual tired tropes about dysfunctional families and half-baked characters...

Nothing to write home about. The cinematography is decent enough, I guess.

I honestly think this movie is fantastic!! My only real gripe is why they titled it Thirteen instead of making it a 15 or 16 rating—the actresses are way too old for actual thirteen-year-olds to relate to; there are parts where a kid that age just wouldn't be able to identify with the lead at all.
The scenes involving the bullying were intense, though.
