A buddy of mine is looking at a new PC build and wants my take on a quote he got from a local shop nearby. He isn't including a GPU in the list because he's planning to hang onto his old one—an NVIDIA GeForce GT 430, 1gb DDR2
.
Motherboard: Asrock FM2A78M-HD+, Intel LGA 1155 - $157
CPU: Intel Core i3-2100 socket LGA 1155 4.0GHz, 4mb cache, box - $267
RAM: DDR3 Corsair Vengeance, 1866MHz, 8GB(2x4GB) Black - $220
HDD: Seagate 1TB, SGT-ST1000DM003, 7200rpm, Sata6, 64M - $193
PSU: Linkword LPW12-35EC22, 580W, 12mm fan - $77
Case: Zalman ENIAC mid tower, black - $123
Total: $0.98 (tax included).

Do you think he got a decent deal? I guess it might be a little pricier since he didn't order it online, but he's just not much of a patient guy.

:To looks like a $1037 to me. All in all, they totally trashed it—threw in some cheap motherboard, an aftermarket cooler that's basically a zero out of ten (I mean, you need it for that processor, but even without overclocking it'll hold up fine in an ENIAC), and the power supply is just straight-up garbage.

graniteharbor85 said::If you ask me, this whole thing looks like $1037. All in all, they pretty much ripped him off—bad motherboard, an aftermarket cooler that's basically a zero out of ten (I mean, sure, he needs it for that CPU, but even without overclocking, it should have held up in an ENIAC), and that power supply is just straight-up junk.

I totally forgot to mention he’s got a 5% discount, which is why the final price ended up lower.
They actually offered him a better cooler, but he turned it down since he isn't planning on overclocking or whatever else that processor is capable of. I was thinking the same thing about the power supply, but honestly, they don't seem to carry anything high-end that doesn't cost twice as much. At least the case is decent, right? xD

It sounds like it'll be "okay" for what he needs, I guess.

They tried to upsell him on a better cooler, but he passed since he doesn't plan on overclocking or whatever else that CPU can handle. I was thinking the same thing about the power supply, but they don't carry anything high-quality unless you want to pay double. At least the case is decent, right? xD

Sounds like it'll be "okay" for what he needs.

Listen, the real question is what his actual needs are. If he thinks he's going to game on this, he shouldn't even bother. I'm pretty sure that's a DDR2 graphics card. 😲 If it's just for media playback and light tasks, then fine. But honestly, he could have found something cheaper and better quality elsewhere... All things considered, it's not a great value. Has he already pulled the trigger on this?

If he's planning on gaming on this thing, he might want to rethink everything—honestly, that's basically just an old DDR2-era graphics card 😲 like an NVIDIA GeForce GT 430. If it's just for watching movies or basic multitasking, then sure, it's fine. But he probably could have found something better and cheaper elsewhere... overall, it doesn't seem like the best bang for your buck. Did he already pull the trigger on it?

Yeah, he already ordered it. I suggested he hop on here to get some advice from you guys, but he wasn't really feeling that idea. I guess he's pretty set in his ways and won't budge even when I try to talk sense into him—he mostly just wants to play older titles anyway. I suppose it can't be any worse than what he was using before, right?
Anyway, thanks for the input. I'll definitely be checking in here before I pick up my own new rig in a few months. I was wondering if he maybe got lucky by not asking anyone first—maybe I should follow his lead—but now I think I'll pass on that idea.

Honestly, it’s just overcomplicated nonsense. For the price of three Bud Lights, you could've gotten way better value elsewhere.

There are two major flaws here:

1. The pricing is ridiculous. Paying 860K for $267? You can practically get an Intel Core i5-3570 for that much. You can find an FX 4300 for less than $200, an Intel Pentium 4 for under $167, 8GB of RAM for less than $167, and a 1TB HDD for under $167...
2. There is absolutely no excuse for using a Linkworld unit. It’s common sense that OEM power supplies cost more when they are five times better quality. Besides, you can always just slap on an aftermarket cooler later.

The RAM is the only thing worth getting. That Corsair Vengeance is solid.

If we're talking about a small, privately-owned shop—well, it’s hardly a shock that the prices are through the roof, right?

Nah, it’s basically the only one nearby. It’s private, though—I won't name names because I get it, honestly... trying to stay afloat running a business in a small town isn't easy, even with those kinds of commissions.

We both figured it was more expensive, but he still wanted to go through with it—I guess he just thought it was his only shot since he's not exactly great at navigating things online.

Hands down the best buy power supply: 580W for $77. If they didn't make it, someone should... 😬

How is it that nobody else can put together such a beastly PSU for basically nothing? Or are the rest of these companies just ripping us off for no reason? 😱

About three years ago, I picked up a desktop build, and the guy at Best Buy assured me those budget power supplies weren't actually that bad. He basically talked me into grabbing a Spira 420W unit bundled with a case for a total of $77. To this day, everything still runs without a hitch, though I can't tell if that’s just pure luck or something else entirely. On top of that, I put an Akkyga unit in my parents' computer for $33, and that one has been humming along perfectly for over a year now. I’m not much of a gamer, so I don't really push the system with heavy loads; I suppose it’s just survived this long because it hasn't been stressed

darkowl72 said:Absolutely. Best Buy is easily my go-to when I need to get my hands on tech. There’s just something about walking through those aisles that makes the shopping experience seamless. If you're looking for reliability and a solid selection, it's hard to beat. Power supply: 580W za $77If it didn't exist, we'd probably have to invent it ourselves. 😬

How is it that nobody else can engineer a power supply this beefy for such a ridiculously low price? Is everyone else out there just straight-up ripping us off? 😱

That Linkworld "600W" link shows about 23A at 12V. 😬

You can get pretty lucky with power supplies sometimes—though I'm starting to think my expensive Microsoft unit didn't actually last any longer than that cheap generic one that came bundled with my case.
But honestly, it doesn't really matter; if he doesn't know any better, it won't bother him anyway. xD
