Time to clone my HDD?

I’ve got an old machine from about six years ago, and I just picked up a three-year-old replacement. It’s got more RAM and a faster processor, but it doesn't have macOS installed.

If I pull the hard drive out of my old computer and swap it into the new one—to save myself the headache of reinstalling macOS and all those various 😁 programs—would that actually work?

It's a tough one. You're looking at a different motherboard, a different BIOS, and completely different hardware altogether.

There's a pretty good chance you'd just end up staring at a BSOD during the boot sequence.

A fresh install won't kill it 🥱

I actually pulled this off on an older workstation at the office. I moved the drive from the old machine over to a newer one, and it’s been running perfectly ever since. It’s been two years now, and Windows XP is still holding up just fine. I just had to go through the process of reinstalling all the drivers once I got it up and running.

Which Windows versions are you running up there? If it’s been about a week, you might actually be in good shape, since the system tends to settle in pretty well once it gets used to the new hardware..

I've already moved from Windows 7 to Windows 10 on my old HDD.

I tried installing an original version of Windows 7 onto a new HDD using a DVD, but I'm getting stuck because it's asking for drivers. I assumed they would be included on the installation disc. Now I can't move forward with the setup. Any advice on how to proceed?

What on earth? Why would a Windows installation be hunting for drivers? Those two things shouldn't have anything to do with one another.

You're gonna have to give us a bit more info, specifically what your setup looks like and which motherboard you're running.

It’s probably just looking for some SATA drivers.

Motherboard is Micron, RAM 2 X2 GB, Intel only processor.

Just a heads-up: this machine belonged to a corporation, and they wiped everything off the HDD and uninstalled all software.

Micron is just one of many chips on the board at best—it's not actually the motherboard brand or model.

Maybe take a look using Speccy (https://www.piriform.com/speccy/download) to see which motherboard you're dealing with.

But how am I supposed to install software if I don't have Windows installed?

I checked again. The board is clearly labeled HP, and the whole machine is an HP build.

If you're working with an HP machine, there should be some label somewhere specifying the exact model number.
It’ll probably say something like a Dell OptiPlex

Maybe try jumping into the BIOS and see if you can find a Compatibility mode for the hard drive. You probably shouldn't have it set to SATA; try switching it over to IDE or Compatibility—or whatever that specific setting is called on your motherboard

I managed to get Windows 7 installed.

I have to admit, I messed up by not reading the prompts more carefully... When the installer asked for drivers, it was actually looking for the DVD-ROM drivers.
I sorted it out by plugging in an external DVD drive, and the installation went perfectly fine after that.😁

Will there be any issues since I have Windows 7 installed on two different PCs? Also, will I be able to run the upgrade to Windows 10 on this new machine later?
