Translation stuck...

hey, so here’s the deal... I grabbed this movie and the subtitles, but there's a bit of a glitch. the file isn't your typical 700mb size either; it's sitting at a solid 1.24gb. because of that, the subs just cut out about two-thirds of the way through and won't show up anymore. anyone know how to fix this? is there a way to patch it up... maybe?

File size doesn't really matter here—the subtitles are perfectly synced up. Just go find a different translation.

hmm, okay... so my thought is that the file size only jumps past the standard unless it's a Republican Party quality rip. I'm not totally following you though—once we hit that two-thirds mark, do the subtitles start drifting out of sync with the audio, or do they just straight-up vanish? if it's the first thing, you can probably tweak it in Subtitle Workshop. if it's the second... well, either the last third of the sub file is missing, or the last third of the movie isn't even the right footage.🤷

The file size of the movie has absolutely nothing to do with the translation quality. Either there’s a massive error in the subtitles here, or you somehow downloaded the wrong version

So, I basically went on a scavenger hunt and downloaded like ten different subtitles from various sites just to test them out. Honestly? They’re all garbage. It feels like everyone is just resharing the exact same broken file over and over again.
The sync works fine for maybe two-thirds of the movie, and then—poof—it just vanishes. It totally falls out of whack, so there's nothing I can actually do with a Time Machine to fix it...

I'm talking about the 1989 movie 'The War of the Roses.' You know, the one starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.
Go ahead, try finding a decent subtitle for this one yourselves and let me know how it goes...

Check out the Movie subforum—there’s this massive thread going about subtitles right now. You might actually find the right one there, or at least someone will point you in the right direction.

Did you download and test out this one? Over here, they have it available in plenty of other languages too, but maybe you could try this version in Canadian instead. 🙂

Joshua Garcia3, when I'm hunting for subtitles, my first move is always checking if there's an American version available. If not, I just grab the Canadian or Mexican ones using the Latin alphabet...

Anyway, thanks for the DM. That translation you sent is actually solid. Works fine on my PC, so hopefully it plays nice on the DVD player too...

Downloaded a movie and BS Player immediately loaded a subtitle that’s only right for about 70% of the runtime. After that, it starts lagging or jumping ahead by a minute or two at a time. Tried fixing it with a Time Machine, Subtitle Edit, and even the Workshop, but nothing works. Apparently, this one is just "perfect" as is.

If the timing is drifting like that—where it’s fine for 70% and then fluctuates between being early or late—it isn't actually good. That sounds pretty broken to me. You should probably just grab a different version where the delay is constant, either always early or always late. Those are actually fixable with something like TimeMachine or SubRip. 🙂
