Upgrading from LGA 1155 socket

Hey there, here's my current setup:

ASUS Z77 Extreme4 (1155)
16GB DDR3
GTX 1080
i5 3570k (OC 4.2Ghz)

What’s a sensible way to tackle an upgrade path here?

Since the 1155 socket doesn't have much left in terms of better CPUs, and moving to anything else means swapping out the motherboard and RAM anyway, is there really any way to upgrade the CPU without just replacing everything else?

Where exactly is that i5 choking you out—which specific apps or games, and what resolution are we talking about?

Maybe just grab an i7K from the same generation instead.

No real bottleneck right now. I play everything at 1440p.

Assassin's Creed Origins hits 100% usage, but that's a known thing. What really got me thinking about upgrading was seeing people with newer Kaby Lake chips not getting pinned at 100% in Origins.

I'm mostly just using this thread for long-term planning and seeing what my options actually look like.

Look, if you’re playing on this setup, you don't need an upgrade right now. Once you actually feel the CPU struggling to keep up with a game (whenever that may be), then come back and ask what to get, because by then, you'll need to know what's actually current.

It doesn't matter if you're sitting at 100% usage as long as your FPS is actually decent.

Bottom line

You’ve got two ways to play this when the time comes: grab a used i7 3770k or an i7 2600k if you can snag a killer deal, or just wait and swap out the entire platform once you're ready for an upgrade. For now, you're sitting pretty with 1440p Assassin's Creed Origins
