Vertebroplasty experiences?

What kind of complications am I looking at with an L2 lumbar vertebroplasty?

My mother’s physician has recommended she undergo vertebral augmentation via vertebroplasty due to some mild vertebral compression fractures. Beyond the brief explanation provided by her doctor and the cursory research I’ve attempted online, I am essentially flying blind regarding this procedure. If anyone here has personal experience navigating a vertebroplasty, I would be deeply grateful for any insight you could provide...

It’s definitely important to track down a specialist who’s done this a lot—there are certain nuances you really need to keep an eye on during these kinds of surgeries.

As for complications? You might run into an infection, though that should be pretty rare since it's a percutaneous procedure... There's also the risk of cement leaking into the disc space or the spinal canal, among other things.

You really ought to weigh your options carefully here—if you wait too long, the spine could end up being a total loss, which would leave you needing a kyphoplasty, and those are way more expensive.

Everyone’s doing fine. Three of them are out of the country—one had his "surgery" done at the Vertebralis clinic in Washington, D.C.

I am truly grateful for the information provided. It has offered a much-needed sense of encouragement, however slight... I intend to reach out to the clinic mentioned to see what kind of path they suggest for my next steps...

Does anyone have a recommendation for an orthopedic surgeon who performs those surgeries in Washington, D.C.? Maybe a name or contact info? 🙂

KBCSM ... orthopedics (at Mayo Clinic), neurosurgery and radiology (at Johns Hopkins). All three departments are in the same hospital

I’d suggest steering clear of neurosurgery if you have a wide range of options.
