So I hit up someone on Craigslist about an ad, just checking if the warranty was still good since the device is supposedly pretty much brand new... He told me the warranty is legit, but he doesn't have the actual paperwork for the specific part I'm eyeing. He mentioned I'd probably have to register it using the serial number instead. Does that sound sketchy to you guys? Anyone ever dealt with something like that before?

As long as the retailer where you bought it has that serial number on file, you should be able to claim the warranty. I know of cases where people couldn't get service without a receipt, but I'm not entirely sure if the shop is still legally required to take the component in for repair under consumer protection laws.

It all feels a bit murky to me, honestly. I mean, it’s definitely possible that the retailer won't budge without an official receipt, but if you happen to know the importer who actually brought the device into the country, maybe you could take it straight to them? There might be a way they could honor the warranty based on the serial number alone. I guess it might be worth doing a little more digging into where exactly it was purchased and seeing what your options are there.
