This is an autobiographical drama tracing the life of screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz and his cinematic journey toward creating one of the greatest films in history: Citizen Kane. The story dives into the creation of that legendary title while exploring his messy, complicated relationship with Orson Welles.

It hits Netflix on December 4th, following a limited theatrical run in late November to ensure it stays in the hunt for an Oscar.

The trailer should be dropping any day now. Expectations are through the roof, especially after hearing what Aaron Sorkin had to say about it:

“It’s so freaking good,” Sorkin said of “Mank.” “Written by [Fincher’s] dad, who is a brilliant screenwriter. But David has directed this movie just magnificently. It’s breathtaking even by David Fincher standards. Gary Oldman gives an amazing performance, so does Lily Collins, and so does Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies.”

The movie is great.

Finally, a solid period piece done with the right vintage aesthetic.

Kudos to Fincher. It was totally unexpected, but I think he’ll snag plenty of Oscars with this one.

I bet both critics and cinephiles will love it, especially those who have a soft spot for that era of Hollywood.

Yeah, I’m reading it too. First they claim the movie is some absolute masterpiece, and then immediately start dropping teasers before we've even seen an official trailer 🙂 Maybe they helped direct the thing, who knows

Look, this definitely isn't a movie for everyone—especially not for today's crowds who only care about mindless action, superheroes, and cheap, low-brow comedies.

When I was just a kid, I used to be obsessed with those old-school black-and-white gangster flicks, but now that I’m hitting my fifties, I guess my taste has shifted quite a bit.

What kind of movies are you guys into lately?

Look, this isn't some mobster flick, but I honestly don't get why people react with such pure disdain toward black-and-white films. Don't get me wrong—I usually prefer color too—but for certain movies, black-and-white just works better. At least, it does for me.

Black-and-white films truly belonged to the era in which they were produced, primarily because that was simply the standard technology available at the time. Nowadays, when I see someone choosing to make a film in monochrome, I can't help but feel it leans more toward a lack of creative vision or perhaps just a desperate attempt at experimentation.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if David Fincher went with black and white just because he ran out of actual ideas.

No, I suppose with him, it feels more like he’s just running an experiment—sort of a "let's see how this plays out" kind of situation.😁

Does David Fincher really have to shoot the entire thing in black and white just to see how it turns out?

Alright, I suppose there might be some sort of logical justification for choosing to film a movie using this particular technique, but I am struggling to see it.
