WhatsApp XMPP

For the last couple of days, I haven't been able to connect via XMPP to Meta Messenger, whether I'm on my PC or my phone.

Did they decide to kill off the protocol or something? I'm trying to connect to chat.facebook.com using port 5222.

On my desktop, Pidgin just gives me this error: "Server closed the connection."

It's strange because everything has worked perfectly for months... 🤷

Anyone have any leads?

Actually, doesn't matter—here is the official word (just so nobody else wastes their time if they're stuck in the same boat):

On April 30, 2014, we announced the deprecation of the WhatsApp XMPP Chat API as part of the release of Platform API v2.0.

After April 30th, 2015 apps will no longer be able to access the service or API. This includes both access to chat.facebook.com and the xmpp_login permission.

We recommend people access Meta Messenger on the desktop via Facebook.com or Messenger.com.

What a mess. Just one more reason for me to go full hermit on BitTorrent.

I’m trying to wrap my head around this whole XMPP password situation... apparently, someone managed to log into my Facebook account several times today from completely different locations using that specific password? How is that even possible? I'm just trying to figure out what's actually going on here...

You're basically asking someone who's been banned from the forum—someone who isn't even going to see your message unless they happen to be browsing while logged out or using some other account.
