Maybe I’m just overthinking things, but I can't shake the feeling that whenever someone walks in, they’d much rather find a spot somewhere else or just stay standing than sit right beside me. Does anyone else ever feel this way? 😕

Haha, I’m honestly praying to God that nobody sits next to me. I might just end up buying a car just so I don't have to deal with all those bores on the subway.

But if we want to be optimistic, here are a few tactical moves:
1. Pick the window seat instead of the one near the aisle.
2. When you see someone approaching, make brief eye contact and subtly shift your legs to the right—it’s a silent signal that the space is open.
3. If the subway is packed and the only available seat is next to you, just stare out the window. Even if you hear someone sitting down, keep staring blankly for another two or three minutes.
4. Whatever you do, never look at the person who sat down next to you.

Honestly, I wish I had your problems for once. I absolutely can't stand it when people shove and push their way onto the subway, and in a city like Chicago, those trains are practically packed solid during the day anyway... plus, when those old ladies overindulge on seafood... UGH! -,-

But maybe don't pick up a fig journal or anything of the sort.

Man, I went through this exact same thing a few years back. It always started right after I’d settle in to actually READ A BOOK on the subway... suddenly, a crowd would just swarm around me out of nowhere, like, so fast you could barely even breathe! 🤣

I always make sure to snag that seat right by the window 😉 (just so I can zone out and ignore the world), but then a crowd of people piles onto the bus and suddenly everyone would rather stand in the aisle than sit next to me. Every once in a while—maybe like every fifth trip or something—someone will actually ask if they can sit down near me.

I finally realized it's because I'm just not the type of person people gravitate toward; instead, I'm usually the one who has to make the move toward others... which honestly isn't even that bad compared to being constantly hounded by some random old ladies on the street... :/ My friend is basically a walking magnet for those types of people, too. One time, I left her alone for literally five minutes to run into a CVS to grab something, and when I came back, some lady had already cornered her and told her her entire life story. 😁

Sure. People walk right in and nobody even thinks about sitting next to me. For a while there, I actually thought maybe there was something wrong with me.

Honestly, I don't think it's anything you're doing.
For some reason, even when half the seats are wide open, a ton of idiots choose to just stand there 🙂 I have no clue why, because if I see a chair, I'm taking it immediately, and then I just stare at all these people who insist on standing.
And even once I do grab a seat, I’d much rather sit by myself than deal with someone else; I feel like most people feel the exact same way.
It's nothing personal, really—I don't even look at who's sitting where, I just try to snag a spot, and if I can't, I'll just stand.
And yeah, I definitely notice that when I take a seat, a bunch of them stay standing or go hunting for other spots, or they'll even sit near someone else, which honestly feels like a relief to me. 🙂
