I’ve been sitting here thinking about this lately (it's all Charles's fault 🙂) regarding how you just don't see punks walking down the streets of cities like Chicago or Seattle anymore, people you can actually look at and know immediately that they listen to punk music. Even though I know plenty of folks who swear they're into the scene but don't look the part, and honestly, I'm such a coward myself for even noticing, which is just pathetic and sad... 🤔

So where the hell did all the punks go?

Maybe try starting some kind of "reformed cooperative" (if I'm guessing right from your nickname, maybe you still come from those types of groups), and then join up with your buddies as a self-manager. That’s where the rebellion actually happens—though, honestly, you did just call yourself a wimp earlier.
Once you've done that, start spreading those "reformed cooperatives" all the way to London and beyond. That's how you'll find your way into that scene, not to mention all the comrades who'll be cheering and shouting your name along the way.

Real punks are usually around 40 years old 🙂 or maybe a little older.
And true punks weren't just about the aesthetic; there was way more substance behind bands like the Sex Pistols or Sham 69 than just the look. It was an attitude and genuine rebellion, backed up by the right books and movies.
Back in the 80s, you had clearly defined subcultures—goths, alternative kids, punks, and so on—but everyone actually had some sort of underlying philosophy.
(Nowadays, I watch my coworker at the office: he’ll jump from listening to Placebo to pop hits, then over to Lykke Li, and suddenly he’s vibing to Faith and the Mus, and he thinks it all fits together perfectly. On one hand, it's good that newer generations aren't so rigid, but still... listening to just anything without any sense of direction? I don't get it.)

Obviously, it isn't just about the clothes, we all know that, but what we really need to ask is where did all that sense of identity go?
It's true that people rarely stick to just one genre these days, but honestly, why bother labeling yourself when you can just listen to whatever you want?😬
