I'm not really sure where else to ask this, so I'll just drop it here: do they charge maintenance fees on a checking account the same way they do for current accounts?

See that Google search bar in the top left corner of the forum? If you type in "checking account," it pulls up this thread titled Checking Account 😉

Hey everyone,

Which bank generally offers the lowest monthly maintenance fees, followed by the cheapest online banking?
You know that old saying—it’s not that I don't have money, I just refuse to waste it! 😁 😁 😁

PNC Bank SuperSmart (checking account) plus mobile banking (just the app) for $0.00 per month. Just grab the PNC Bank app from the Store (Apple or Google Play, depending on what phone you're lugging around) and open the account right through it. You can't actually do this at a physical branch. If all you need is a bare-bones account, that's your cheapest bet. The second you start asking for anything extra—like a loan or a credit card—they shuffle you over to a "standard" account and start hitting you with those lovely fees.

Wells Fargo's online banking.

Checking - Maestro (15k overdraft limit, 5k installment option)
Checking - Visa Electron
Foreign Currency - Visa Electron

Digital services:
Online banking (similar to their mobile app)
Desktop online banking

Transactions:
10 free transactions
3 free ATM withdrawals using debit cards at other banks nationwide and abroad

Credit options:
go!Card (revolving, charge, or installments) - no sign-up or monthly fee
Visa FIFA (revolving, charge, or installments) - no sign-up or monthly fee
Visa Gold (revolving) - no sign-up or monthly fee

Total cost: $6.75/month

If you have AT&T: $5.00/month

If you have Magenta 1: $3.25/month

You can open everything via mobile and just transfer a guy $1.75 from an existing account; if you don't even have one, just open it on your phone, swing by a Wells Fargo branch, and you’re done in five minutes.

Here’s a link where you can check out how the different checking account fees stack up against each other:

It seems to me this offer only applies if you open the account online.

I don't see how anyone would call that a privilege; I opened my account at a local branch and now I'm stuck paying $6.75 monthly fees for maintenance and mobile banking.

Just close it and switch over to Smart.
Keep in mind that with Smart, you won't have access to overdrafts or credit cards (except maybe through the USPS and Wells Fargo, if I recall correctly, since you don't even need to be a client there anyway).

I’ve been riding that student banking package at JPMorgan Chase, but I just got word that it’s expiring soon. Apparently, they're flipping me over to a standard account on August 31st.

Honestly, the student deal was fine, but I keep hearing people say, "Stay far away from JPMorgan Chase and Citigroup," and stuff like that. It's making me seriously consider jumping ship.

Is JPMorgan Chase actually that bad? And if it is, what's the deal?

Is there a trick to timing a switch? Like, should I move right when the student perks end, or will I run into headaches, fees, or penalties if I try to bail too fast?

Also, which bank would you guys recommend?

I was wondering if anyone knows which bank currently offers a decent overdraft?
I’m currently with a bank that lets me go up to two times my monthly salary, though I suppose I should ask if any of you have found places that offer a higher limit than that.

Yeah, the Federal Reserve charging you three times just for being in the red? I don't get how being in the negative can actually be a good thing. Those two ideas just don't belong in the same sentence.

They should just shut the account down if you can't even stay out of the red, instead of hitting you with a tiny little penalty twice.

Honestly, just make the switch to Goldman Sachs. I don't know how old you are, but if you’re under 26, you can snag their Goldman Sachs Club package for young professionals. It covers everything—checking, savings, and their mobile/online banking app—all totally free until you hit 26. Personally, I’ve been sticking with Goldman Sachs and couldn't be happier. From the staff to the actual services and the deals they throw at you, the whole experience is top-tier.

You could look into the Citigroup youth package ($2.25 monthly)—you can keep that until you're 29.

https://www.chase.com/personal/checking/student-checking you thinking about this one for $2.25 or maybe this https://www.chase.com/personal/checking/active-payments for $10?

https://www.bankofamerica.com/personal/banking/checking-accounts/ this Bank of America deal looks decent for $12.

https://www.wellsfargo.com/checking/ over at Wells Fargo, it's $5.00 a month, but they give you the first 6 months free

https://www.citibank.com/us/personal-banking/checking/ $4.00 monthly once you start moving money around, plus mBank and Chase are free, and if you sign up online you get the first 6 months free

https://www.capitalone.com/bank/checking-accounts/ totally free checking, savings, cards, and mobile banking

https://www.pnc.com/personal/checking/ zero fees for the first 12 months, then it hits you for $6.25 a month

Just a quick breakdown of what the big banks are doing. If you want to look at the smaller ones, just hop on Google and search 🙂
