Why are threads being closed?

How does it actually work when a thread gets locked because there aren't any new replies, and is that even really necessary for a site like this? Or do they just stay open indefinitely until someone decides otherwise...

And another thing... how on earth am I supposed to figure out if a topic has already been started when there are like a million different threads scattered everywhere and it’s impossible to scroll through them all manually...

(Please don't roast me if these questions seem a bit clueless) 🙂

Look, you’ve got a search bar for a reason,
threads shouldn't be getting locked just because the Offtopic section gets busy, or because I list something for sale in the Classifieds...
There's really no need to shut everything down; people might want to jump back into a conversation later on...
What you're saying here is way too vague.

there's absolutely no need to shut down every single thread, people should be able to jump back in whenever they want...
