Why do we keep overvaluing individual stats?

It feels like we get so caught up in how well a single player is performing that we completely ignore how much they're actually helping (or hurting) the team's overall momentum. Is anyone else tired of seeing great individual performances go totally unrewarded because the rest of the roster just can't keep up?
