America is an overwhelmingly Catholic country. According to the last census, that's how the vast majority identifies (I don't have the exact stats on hand, but we're talking somewhere in the 90% ballpark). If this were a predominantly Hindu nation, it would make sense to introduce Yoga into the curriculum.
If they actually started introducing spiritual exercises, you all would be up in arms, screaming about how we're sliding back into the Middle Ages and complaining about having certain prayers before class or whatever else.
The influence of spiritual practices would actually be beneficial for kids. Plus, it's much closer to our own culture.
Yoga is a product of another religion, so it's perfectly natural for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to react the way they do.
And if someone wants to practice Yoga, I think there are plenty of opportunities to do that privately. Why should I, as a taxpayer, have to fund the products of some other foreign religion?
You're entitled to your opinion, but stop generalizing. For instance, I'm not into Yoga at all, but I'm not into Catholicism either. I believe in a personal God and in whatever brings me fulfillment and peace in life. So tell me, why should
me as a taxpayer have to foot the bill for a massive amount of stupid stuff in this country that serves zero interest of mine—including religious education in schools and various other byproducts of the Catholic Church, all under the guise of "spiritual enlightenment" when it's really just about enriching the institution itself? Let's not kid ourselves: the Church is the wealthiest institution in the country.😉
Look, as a citizen of this country, I have to pay taxes that fund both religious needs and science, even though I'm an atheist and couldn't care less about either.
By the way, that 90% Catholic figure you're citing is highly inflated. I can tell you for a fact, based on everything I see and hear around me, that at least
half of those "devout" Catholics are only Catholic because they feel forced to be in this country, and they'd face social backlash if they dared to identify as anything else or as atheists.😉
Yoga shouldn't be seen as a threat to the Catholic Church. I don't see why the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is making such a fuss. Actually, I do see why, but I'll leave that comment out.😉
