That’s exactly what I was thinking... xD

So, should I just stick with XP, or is it finally time to make the jump and install Windows 7 ??!

So, you've got a laptop without an OS, and now you're looking to install Windows 7 on it, right?

@ driftingmarlin70

"Expect to see service pack 1 released in its Final form during First quarter 2011" (link)

So, March 31st at the absolute latest. 🙄
Or, if you actually bother to run your updates regularly, you basically already have SP1, minus a few minor tweaks. 😁

So, if I'm constantly updating,

yeah, true... but what happens when sp1 drops if I already have all the updates installed? What's left for it to even grab?

The linked page says: "SP1 includes both a roll-up of operating system updates and several new capabilities for Windows Server."

If we ignore those "several new capabilities," this is pretty much essential. IMHO.

How can I get TV working through WMC? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit... did a bit of digging online and stumbled upon this: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/9376/...ut-a-tv-tuner/ but when I check my menu, this is what shows up instead: http://i53.tinypic.com/10nc09d.jpg

Does anyone have any idea what's going wrong here?

All we need is a quote.

This feature may not be available in all countries. Users who are in the US should be able to use Hulu which integrates into Windows Media Center. If you’re in the US and don’t see this option, make sure you have all of the latest updates for WMC.

Anyone have any clue what's going on here?

The guide is for a live TV setup, but I'm using a USB DVB-T stick👍

So, they just announced the 8, what’s everyone’s take on that?? Am I totally blowing it by posting this here or is this thread actually okay for it??

There’s already a thread somewhere discussing that version 8 stuff,
I swear some people would be thrilled if a new OS dropped every single morning, but then there's us—we aren't exactly in any rush to change things up 👍

Douglas Garcia52 said:You might run into some audio issues stemming from the drivers—specifically the sound card drivers.

The thing is, Windows doesn't just pull every single driver automatically—it's inconsistent. You’ll almost always find yourself hunting down specific ones and installing them manually.

Like I mentioned before, just give it a shot; you have nothing to lose since reverting back to Windows XP is a breeze.👍

I ended up switching back to Windows XP. If you're just looking at Windows 7 for basic tasks, it'll probably be fine. However, I ran into significant headaches trying to get my multimedia setup (my HTPC) working properly. I might have been able to troubleshoot my way through it, but honestly, it wasn't worth the sheer amount of effort required. 😁 It would likely turn into a constant cycle of maintenance for features that you really just expect to work right out of the box.
But again, to reiterate, if your needs are strictly limited to browsing the web, using Microsoft Office, and similar tasks, even an old relic running Windows 7 can handle it. My struggles were almost entirely centered around driver compatibility and those kinds of technical hurdles.

And sure enough, just as you suspected, the audio was completely dead—I had to go hunt down and install the driver myself.

Since we’re already on the subject of drivers... a buddy of mine mentioned he couldn't find any specific drivers for Windows 7 on his motherboard manufacturer's website. So, it makes me wonder: will Windows 7 just handle installing everything necessary on its own? What are your thoughts on this?

@ Zachary Parker84

It would be best if you just downloaded Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor—assuming you haven't already—to see exactly what you're working with regarding your current PC specs. 😉

Honestly, if you haven't done it yet, it might be a good idea to just download the Windows 7 upgrade Advisor. That way, you can actually see where you stand and figure out what your current PC is truly capable of. 😉

Thanks a million for that... I've already started losing hope that anything will work with 7...🙏

Hey everyone, just wanted to give you a quick rundown of what I'm dealing with... I'm trying to get Windows 7 running on a laptop that previously had XP. It was the 32-bit version, but the hardware itself is 64-bit, though I don't think that should be much of an issue. During the installation process, things got pretty glitchy—the installer would freeze up several times, forcing me to restart the whole thing. I honestly can't tell if it's a bad disc, a failing hard drive, or something else entirely, but after three tries, I finally managed to get the system up and running. It worked fine for about two days, but then out of nowhere, the whole computer just froze solid. I couldn't even pull up Task Manager or do anything, so I had no choice but to hard reboot by holding down the power button. Now, when I try to turn it back on, all I see is that little blinking cursor in the top left corner. Just... ugh. I tried popping in my Windows 7 disc to run a repair or something similar, and it starts off okay—it goes through the "copying files" phase, but once it hits that "LOADING" screen with the Microsoft Corporation logo, it just hangs there forever. Any ideas? Could this be a hardware failure, or has anyone dealt with something similar and actually fixed it? I'd really appreciate any insight you guys could share.

..just wipe the drive and install a reliable OS, then you can mess around with Windows all you want..
... because if I say one single bad thing about that "perfect" software, they'll just nuked my post here for the millionth time...
