Soaking them with some powder for maybe two days helps, then you just gotta beat the sweat out of them with your fists.
It’s also pretty important to dry everything thoroughly after training—your kimono, for instance.

I'm 36 years old and looking for some advice. I want to pick up a martial art, mostly just for recreation rather than trying to become a pro athlete or anything. I've been eyeing some "non-traditional" options—stuff that isn't necessarily mainstream—like Kendo, Judo, Nanbudo, Budokai, and my top pick, Capoeira. Can anyone tell me a bit about them? Also, do they actually welcome adults? To be honest, I don't want to walk in there feeling like a lost kid at a playground or looking totally out of place.
If anyone has any helpful insights, I’d really appreciate a few pointers or answers!
Thanks!👍

Regarding Aikido... I seem to recall training with an old gentleman from somewhere around the sixth bank back in the day...

Hey everyone.
New to the forum. I work in security—constantly around people—and I’m prepping to take my executive protection certification. It’s still three months out, but given the nature of the job, I want to be ready. Does anyone know a solid Jiu Jitsu club? Ideally somewhere they train more than twice a week—specifically looking for Japanese Jiu Jitsu style. I'm originally from a smaller town outside the city but I'm working in the metro area now. If you know any good spots, let me know...
Hey. Thanks.👍🙂

Hey there.
Working as a security guard—so I’m looking for a solid Jiu Jitsu club in NYC. Specifically Japanese Jiu Jitsu... planning on going into bodyguard work soon, so I need something practical for training.
Hey.🤷😕

Personally, I’d opt for a specialized Krav Maga course tailored specifically to your line of work, led by an instructor who actually knows their stuff. You want to avoid some rookie who thinks they’re an expert just because they’ve done a few classes and three years of training. I’m not sure what the current scene looks like in NYC; you should check the Krav Maga thread. If you’re serious, maybe you could even arrange some private coaching? In my view, that would focus on techniques you can actually use on the job, whereas classic Jiu-Jitsu operates on a different logic altogether. I won't dwell on it.

Hey everyone, just one quick question related to this thread, but if there are any weekend warriors in here, maybe you can help me out... Does anyone know where I can pick up some Under Armour gear here in the city? It’s pretty huge in the MMA world, the NFL, the USMC, and stuff like that... Sorry for the off-topic tangent, and thanks if anyone knows...
#2530 ·
recro, this is totally offtopic... ugh. I’m thinking about just grabbing some wrist wraps online, but if anyone’s actually done much online shopping for gear, is it worth it? Or should I just head out and hit up some shops in Los Angeles instead? Also, should I grab bandages too, or just stick to the wraps? thanks...

Does anyone know if there's a way to catch MMA events via pay-per-view online? Honestly—standard streaming links are a nightmare. They lag constantly, and I’m tired of the fighting freezing right when a knockout is happening. Thanks.

I have a question 🙂
I’m on the shorter side—about 5'2"—but I’ve got plenty of power; my fast-twitch muscles definitely take precedence over the slow ones. Right now, I'm following a specific summer regimen designed to boost my speed, endurance, and raw strength simultaneously... essentially, I'm doing hybrid muscle training.
I want to pick up a martial art that is truly effective and devastating against street fighters. I need something where the techniques for both defense and offense allow me to actually overcome a typical aggressor.
😛
So, what I'm wondering is: which martial arts focus most on pure strength, which prioritize speed, and so on? Ultimately, which discipline would be the absolute best fit for someone with my build—short, powerful, and weighing around 117 lbs?
Also, I've recently started practicing parkour. 🙂
(My ultimate goal is to become formidable in combat, because I need to be able to hold my own against my father, who was trained by the military and trains every single day.) 😁

It’s kind of like Muay Thai, or something along those lines 🙂
but I’m also really interested in Judo techniques, leg strikes, hand strikes—honestly, everything about it catches my interest 🙂...

If you’re strictly looking at self-defense, you have a few solid paths.
Krav Maga, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or maybe Muay Thai or MMA (though those last two are more sport-focused, they still work well in a real-world scenario).
Take some time to look them up on YouTube or Wikipedia, and then let us know if you have more questions.

Karen James2 and Dennis Lopez46 aren't even martial arts, yet she's out here looking for them

xD DAP martial arts, huh? Honestly, I’m not even looking for something for self-defense... I need something more geared toward offense ^.^

So you're already diving into the philosophy of martial arts.🙂
My previous advice still stands.

Hey there.🙂 I would recommend checking out an excellent Kyokushin club in the suburbs of Chicago; the instructor is top-tier. Your username suggests you might be from that area, and if you are, those sessions provide exactly what you are looking for.

Looking for some info—where online can I catch MMA events via pay-per-view without those constant buffering issues? You know the drill—trying to use those free live stream links is basically a guarantee of a frozen screen every five minutes. Thanks.
