I’m practically a novice when it comes to sports. I did some judo and swimming back in the day, but nothing long-term. For the last year, I’ve been hitting the gym, but now I want to commit to something more serious.
I want to find something that will get me in peak condition and help me pack on some muscle 🙂 mass. I'm willing to put in the work; I just need a coach. A friend has been training me in kickboxing for a while now, but I feel like an idiot walking into a club at 20 years old asking where to start. Usually, everyone my age has already been doing this for years—there aren't really any beginners left once you hit 20...

Please, can anyone recommend a club where they are actually welcoming? I don't want to feel like a total outsider. 🙂

Also, if you have better recommendations than kickboxing, feel free to speak up. 🙂

Don't sweat being new. If you’ve got the drive, you’ll catch up to them in no time. 🙂
I’m not going to give you any specific recommendations yet because you didn't mention which city you're in. Tell us where you're located so people can actually point you toward a decent club. 😁 That's all.

Ah, missed that. 🙂

I started training about 20 years ago. We actually have quite a few guys in our club who started back then too...

If you don't like the vibe anywhere else, just go ahead and do it. If being a "too old" beginner ends up being a disaster, you can always just quit BJJ in Los Angeles.

I haven't been personally, but friends of mine who train there say the crew is more than alright. They say it's really not an issue if you're older and starting from scratch.

Just saying—if nothing else works out, I know you asked about kickboxing, but hey, that's LA. You don't have many options.

I seem to recall someone posting a link here for a shop—a local one, if memory serves—that sold bokken and training gear. They were designed so the handles looked just like a standard katana's, and I think the "blade" was either wrapped in some sort of material or just painted, though I'm not entirely certain.

Could someone perhaps remind me of the name of that shop?
😢I can't find it.

Hmm... what do you mean by "rough" like a standard katana? :?

EDIT:

Ah, I see. That was from a ninjutsu club they had over in New Haven. They had the saya and everything. Unfortunately, I have no idea where one actually buys those things.😢

Actually, I suppose... it wasn't just a simple piece of wood. It looked more like some sort of wrapped sample up there...

I'm trying to track down where I can train Japanese Jiu-Jitsu here in the US—specifically the traditional style from the Far East😁. I’m not looking for BJJ; I want the actual Japanese stuff.

(I’ve been scouring this forum, but I'm getting 0 hits)

Thanks!!

I don't think so.

I've bought stuff from him before, just not through the website.

I suppose I should ask:
What is your take on this?

Who, me or my gear? 🙂

I’m pretty happy with certain pieces of equipment, though some definitely miss the mark.
There is way too much to cover here, so just ask about something specific.

LOL
🤣
They’d probably try to take me down with a bokken or something, but certainly not with a Perodua.

Amanda Morris28; I suppose I’m wondering where one might find a place to train Japanese Jiu-Jitsu in Tampa, specifically looking for the traditional styles from the Far East😁. I’m not particularly interested in BJJ; I’m looking for the actual Japanese discipline.

(I have been scouring this forum, but it seems there hasn't been a single response)

There was a club operating out of some local combat sports gyms a while back that used to teach that style, and they probably still do. It might be worth taking a walk around town to see if they're still active

Anyone know any decent websites where I can order some high-quality knives (preferably folding ones)?

Thanks in advance!!

Take a look at www.replikart.com.
If they don't have what you need, I suppose you could order them in cold steel through those guys.
Maybe try www.maestralprom.com
