The Flaming Lips are a great band, but I don't think they belong on the main stage. It felt like the crowd's energy was directly tied to how many strobe lights were flashing—basically, the more effects, the more people actually cared. Only about thirty people were even singing along during Yoshimi :/

Dubioza Kolektiv was pure bliss. I haven't heard their latest stuff, but the crowd was totally into them. Really nice vibe.
BSS—didn't hear much of them, but man, they sounded incredible. Such a shame I didn't show up earlier.
Caribou—they were alright; I think they could really hold their own if they tightened up the set. 😁
New...—solid little band.
Massive Attack—oh yeah, they killed it, even without the big screens. And Horace Andy? Total legend.

It was a good festival this year. Mary, seriously, fix the damn sound on the second stage. Which one is yours again? It’s been years and it’s the same crap every single time. Dragas, stop throwing Mary under the bus.

I've been loving Radiohead ever since they were just kids starting out!😳

Wait, are you talking about that "cold and messy experiment" one?😂

Sorry, I actually just deleted my previous post because it was totally off-topic...
Now you're the one being off-topic!🙂
🤣

And those guys you mentioned, Did... they're pretty underground, but I bet they're an amazing band. It would be so awesome if they played at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival next year. Or hey, maybe we could get Arcade Fire instead?
I’m literally sitting here laughing to myself offline—man, I am having such a good time today!

BSS - boring as hell and a warning 🤷
Caribou - a pleasant surprise for me. Repetitive, danceable, sort of minimalist indie rock/electro stuff that requires the band members to basically be in a trance to pull off. I stuck around for the whole set, grabbed some food, and waited for NYPC.

NYPC 👋 Started out lukewarm and weird with bad vocals and some pretty moronic attempts at crowd interaction, like asking us to shout out what we want in life 😕 Okay, I get it, that was the intro to the song, but still.
The terrible first impression was fueled by a bunch of pre-hipsters in the front right who were spreading out everywhere and acting like they couldn't care less about the music because they were just there to prove they're L00DI 🤮

But! As the show went on, it kept getting better and better. They actually built some chemistry with the crowd, and you could say they absolutely crushed it Through some kind of weird magic, they had us all jumping like crazy 👋

It was just as good hearing the tracks from the first album that I already knew as it was the stuff from the second that I didn't really know, but after this, I definitely want it.

Also, an interesting detail: they played a cover of the PJ Harvey Dress, which was probably the exact moment they won me over 😬 On top of that, interestingly enough, they immediately followed it (intentionally or not) with their own Tight Fit, which starts with lyrics that are a hommage (again) to PJ Harvey (that Man-size thing).

I want to fit
I’ve got to get into it

Anyone else think that was a total rip-off?

After that beauty, I rested up a bit and caught part of the Massive Attack show (Angel 😍 and so on...). It was wild when I realized they translated the text on the video wall into American. Jesus, it was like watching powerful Max 🙏

Tyler Howard46 said:it was worth the entry fee just for the lineup featuring the indie acts, $97 and honestly, considering we had Massive Attack on the bill, the price felt like a steal compared to the rest of the roster.

Fair point... I paid my full ticket price $83 and yet, looking back, I feel like I actually owe them more.🤣

For me, it’s almost flipped—The Flaming Lips = pure vibes, while Massive Attack = total depression. I mean, I'm not even talking about how good they are as bands, just the headspace they put me in.

Anyway, I didn't actually sit through any single set from start to finish—spent most of my time just wandering around...

Here’s the breakdown of what I caught:
BSS — honestly, I usually find them pretty dull, but they were actually decent live.
The Flaming Lips — solid enough, but they didn't totally blow my mind. Maybe it just wasn't my day for them? Or maybe it's because I've never been their biggest fan to begin with.
Massive Attack — look, I don't follow them religiously, nor have I seen them before, so I can't get too technical here—but man, they were awesome. Easily the highlight of the main stage stuff for me.

A little bit of this and that:
Caribou — sounded great.
New York Public Library — they were alright.
Gorillaz, Rage Against the Machine, Skindred — meh. Not that I don't get why people love them, but they weren't my thing.
Flogging Molly — saw them once before; the snippet I caught yesterday wasn't half bad.

Tents / Parties:
The one near the exit was okay.
The one way in the back? Honestly, that was probably my favorite part of the whole experience. ^^
Silent Disco — definitely worth checking out at least once.

It honestly looked like they couldn't care less about what was actually playing on stage; they were clearly just there to show off how much of a bunch of L00DI they are. 🤮

Honestly, reading this, I have such a vivid mental picture forming—I can practically see their faces right now! 🤣
hipster types

It’s also pretty interesting that right after that, they played their own Tight Fit (whether it was on purpose or not).

Oh my gosh, they accidentally played their own song?! How on earth did they even manage to pull that off? 🙏 🙏 🙏
Sorry, I just had to say it!

Maybe they just love PJ so much that the whole thing was a subconscious tribute. I guess they didn't even realize there was a connection. 😁

A, what even is this silent disco thing? I mean, what’s the point? It looks like the cops blocked off a hiking trail and suddenly you just have ten joggers in headphones jumping around so they don't catch a chill.

And another weird one. Massive Attack has corporate logos flashing behind them, while on the side, you've got two T-Mobile logos just grinning at you.

heh, Mr. Wrong, regarding Martina, when she played there were only 20 people. Everyone was obsessed with Martina. 😁

Anyway, she seems like a nice girl. 😁 An art girl through and through.
Is it just Tricky's influence, or what?? 😳

The audio from the second stage is actually running through the main system now... some "innovation" they rolled out last year.

...you can find stuff like that everywhere these days. Honestly, nothing beats watching Rage Against the Machine rake in millions while being completely surrounded by the visual branding of giant mega-corporations.

When he performed Girl and I love you, it blew my mind. His delivery was flawless.

I was actually disappointed they didn't play Hymn of The Big wheel. That track is a masterpiece, and that's where Horace really goes wild... 🙏

Yesterday was 🙏

Broken Social Scene offered that wonderful, pretentious indie vibe perfect for sipping a beer on a lawn (one where the bacteria had begun to colonize grass that had been neglected for two days, accompanied by a certain stench 😬).

Caribou 🙂
A magnificent man (a mathematician 😍), magnificent music, and a magnificent sight watching how the snare and the drummer synchronize. And the setlist was lovely... if they had played a few more beautiful old tracks, I wouldn't have missed the beautiful new ones so much; the curse of releasing such high-quality albums back-to-back.

After Caribou, I headed over to The Flaming Lips... my expectations were perfectly aligned with what one knows about the band, which is to say, zero. And, frankly, I actually love that Bob Dylan-esque front 🙂 and the way they handle their shows—just show up, play, and retreat to the trailer—but that little circus act they put on was truly beautiful 😍. I don't know how music lovers react to that much rambling during a short festival set, but as far as I'm concerned, they could have just fired off some confetti and spread pure joy and merriment. A beautiful final song, and a loud one right before it. As for the rest, I didn't experience it because I was too busy exploding with happiness.

Flogging Molly was a fine pub session with sympathetic people, but as always with their rhythms, interest wanes slightly after six songs. Though, I won't deny that attending their concert with enough alcohol would result in epic amounts of jumping and adequate muscle fiber damage the following day. Vomiting on tables and people is also a distinct possibility.

Massive Attack... first, I listened while hovering near a little something in the background (actually just a plastic bag), then drifted forward to see what they were doing on stage (mostly nothing). I haven't had any significant encounters with them in the past, so I don't know how it felt at Madison Square Garden, Madison Square Garden, Munich, Bristol, or even Mars (they didn't particularly impress me on a friend's cassette tape), but yesterday was quite impressive and lovely for a quiet set. A lot of people bought merch during the concert though; I don't know if they are the last Americans who still have steady jobs, or if they simply found it underwhelming. Regardless, perhaps they aren't the best choice following the sheer luck of Caribou, The Flaming Lips, and Flogging Molly, but better they were there than not 🙂

Organization: First, it is lovely that they stopped being so anal about bringing in photo equipment. Good shots of performers are recorded by accredited professionals anyway, and I have no desire to mess around with that (nor can I compete with quality from the crowd), but it’s nice to have the right to bring an SLR and immortalize a pleasant hangout with friends and buddies. Three years ago, they were snatching memory cards from digital idiots, so this is a significant step forward for civilization.
Second, the beer at $5.00 and the food ranging from ? to $12 (and $35 for a rather generous portion of delicacies from the brotherly republic of China) are very reasonably priced, and I appreciate that. I drank and ate plenty.
Third, there was plenty of everything, from currency exchange booths to tables for consuming goods and bins for their excretion.

Given how problematic the first and third points were in the past, I conclude that the organizer is learning and evolving, and sometimes that is more important than the performances on an absolute scale.

The festival itself: we can talk trash about the lineup, the Corporation, the schedule, and whatever else we want, but it is nice to have something like this within reach of the local campus area ☕

That’s $35 for a pretty massive portion of food from China.

My biggest regret from day two—honestly, even more than missing Caribou. Why on earth did they tuck that booth away so far back? I didn't even realize it was there until I was already stuffed. WHY?!?!?!?! 😢
