Directors who totally missed the mark in Movies ·
Oh yeah, and then there's Ivan Reitman too, I guess.

Bottom line: It’s all about the evolution.

The slump has pretty much been going on since Dave's era—so, like, maybe twelve years now? That was actually a really solid movie, but ever since then, it's just been a total disaster. 👎 It's almost like someone went in and just surgically removed his talent or something.

John McTiernan...

I guess he hasn't really hit it out of the park for me since Die Hard III

his absolute lowest point? Probably Rollerball

it feels like this slump has been dragging on for maybe ten years now

Then there's Joe Dante...

The last thing I saw from him that actually worked was Matinee back in '93, and then I haven't really kept up with his stuff lately (not sure how that Looney Tunes: Back in Action turned out)

the slump there: about 12 years😢

So what, a "triumph of the will"?

I guess I agree 👍

it’s probably the best song about cocaine ever written, honestly 👍

well, I guess he might actually be into it then 😉

..it really just depends on whether you're some kind of racial dominatrix who knows how to deal out pain 😳

racial... 🤣 🤣 🙏

anyway, it’s good to know there’s someone out there defending my honor while I was out spending my nights cruising the coast in white Mustangs and spending my days getting lost in endless issues of Dylan Dog 😁 😁

*** I'm only adding this explanation because I know all too well how twisted the human mind can get; I definitely don't want any weird associations tied to my username 🙂

Amanda Palmer3 said:so, am I going with you this Saturday to see Woven Hand in Denver??! 😉

since it's right during Coachella, entry is free, we should probably try to break through the European Union borders..

man, I'll just drive all the way up north, then we can chat about Denver, then we hit the city! then I'll catch some early morning train to Alabama😁

we could even pick up Nettlica! 😍

oh yeah, if you had told me a few days earlier, I definitely would've gone 🙏

I can't do it like this, I'm heading out today at five to Vir, so I'll be by the coast until Monday

dang it... I just can't get out of it... I already promised 😢

we can figure something out for next time a few days ahead of time (spontaneity isn't really my strong suit, I guess 🤣 )... I don't know... Queens of the Stone Age maybe???

and we should definitely bring Nettlica along 😍 I just don't know what her schedule looks like 😁

and then there's his simulation: boom 🙏 🙏

I also just remembered that "under this moon" is definitely one of my favorites too

eh 👍 the duality and explosive energy of this track is just masterclass

Daniel Booth88 said:Anyway, just to flex a little bit, I'm heading to the concert on August 25th.

well, maybe you're just flexing on some people

but for those who didn't even make it to the last show, you're basically hitting them while they're down 😢

ouch 😢 😢

heh, I guess I just couldn't help myself... I started picturing quietdriver3 as this dark, brooding guy suddenly panicking and picking up the pace, maybe trying to hide some unbearable tension under his trousers after hearing the sounds of kids playing at a nearby playground, like some sort of siren call during one of his daily walks past the local park.😁 😛

..just one of those strolls past the playground.

d000d... 🤣 🤣 now that is sick 🤣

Amanda Palmer3 said:forget all those days 😁 I honestly think Good Good day is one of his absolute worst tracks,

I mean, good good day is just such a textbook example of a happy song coming from his pen

I guess songs like that and New Morning just prove he was totally exaggerating whenever he bragged in interviews about how he’d never write anything upbeat 😁 😁

so we really should probably treasure stuff like this and toss it onto various Nick Cave top charts 👍

Amanda Palmer3 said:Darker with The day is just some plain sister with a hunch compared to those Trappov tracks from the same record... not to mention the absolute masterpiece by Boatman'a..

I mean, Darker with The day is probably the best song ever. 🙂

The lyrics are basically perfect, and honestly, the delivery? It's incredible. The way that chorus is recited... I guess they should just give him an Oscar for the most convincing performance of fake vulnerability ever.

Plus, that track feels like the perfect ending to the whole album—like one final walk after all those other walks Nick takes through... well, wherever he ends up.

Maybe they should make it a legal requirement to play this song at funerals. Like, alongside all those standard permits you have to file for a burial (I assume there are specific ones, I don't know, 😁 😁), people should be legally obligated to have this song played. 😛

Amanda Palmer3 said:The genius of Alice isn't really about some big, flashy vocal performance or deep lyrical puzzles. It's more about how simple it is—that synergy between the tempo, the lack of dynamics, and his tone. It creates such a kinky vibe that you end up feeling this weird mix of excitement and shame, almost like you're eavesdropping on some private, creepy confession.

I guess you get that same exact feeling listening to ring-ring-raja by those kids from the suburbs, so maybe you aren't actually listening to them until you pass out at home before coming here to brag about it on the forum. 🙂 🙂 🙂

😁 😁

"Papa won't leave you"... honestly, Henry was my absolute favorite thing from old Nick for a while there.

But then Darker with The day showed up, and I think along with Plain Gold ring and Good Good day, and then these ones here are probably the best stuff👍

though I see some people bringing up Alice and Christina 😲 😲

I don't really get you guys, I guess.

When I listen to Alice, I just end up yawning, maybe? 😲

But Christina is such a genius track for me that I actually wore out a section of Henry's Dream by skipping through it so much... so I have this feeling that Henry's Dream is basically two albums... Henry's and dream 😁 😁
I mean, if I had my way, I’d probably watch everything 👍 👍

but from what I've heard, the ones people actually talk about are Grumpy Old Men, The Toxic Avenger (obviously!), Romeo and Juliet, and Sergeant Kabuki Kickboxing

Brian Gonzalez7 said:You missed a ton of stuff: what about Evil Dead or Hellraiser? Or those clunky ones like Toxic Avenger?
And then there's the Japanese stuff like Ju-on, Otogoriso... and I won't even get started on the hundred or so Takashi Miike movies (though I probably should mention Audition)
As for Australian productions, Undead definitely stands out in horror/SF, and then there's the Canadian Ginger Snaps......etc etc etc etc 😉 😁

what am I? An IMDb?

those were just some examples, I guess 😛

Amanda Edwards78 said:I’m not really a fan of Japanese cinema myself.
btw, what does Eraserhead even have to do with horror?

everything Lynch does, I guess, falls under psychological horror... 😛

I realized I totally missed the "European underground" category, though I suppose we could probably slot Necromantic and stuff like that in there.
Demon Director's Cut in Movies ·
Ethan Perez97 said:I guess my only real issue is that I’ve never really been a fan of Japanese cinema, so I tend to steer clear of that third group.

Otherwise, besides Cronenberg, I’d say Wes Craven’s early stuff like Last House on the Left fits into that fourth category, along with maybe something like Hopper's Eaten Alive... there's plenty more too, like Necromancy, Spit on Your Grave, Thundercrack, and so on.

I'm with you on that... 👍

I totally forgot about Necromancy. 🙂

Amanda Edwards78 said:Come on, come onnnn! Where are the examples? I'm waiting impatiently!!! 👋 👋

1.) Usually you start with stuff like Freddie, Jason, Myers, or Leatherface (basically anything hitting theaters)
2.) Zombie, Cannibal Holocaust, City of the Living Dead, demon, Graveyard Disturbance, and so on.
3.) Ichi, Bio Zombie, Men Behind the Sun, Bible Black, Ebola syndrome... I guess you could also throw in Jackson’s early work since they're "geographically" pretty close. 😉
4.) Faces of Death, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, early Cronenberg stuff, Eraserhead

There are always exceptions, of course. 🙂
George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead in Movies ·

but I guess in this specific instance, it isn't really a "case" at all...

George A. Romero's Dawn of the Dead in Movies ·
cosmicraven2 said:The biggest issue is that they haven't aired the earlier George A. Romero zombie movies on TV (and honestly, they probably never will). It makes things pretty confusing and kind of nonsensical for anyone sitting down to watch Land of the Dead, because suddenly the zombies are evolving. But that whole concept actually started back in Dawn of the Dead, with that one zombie, Bub—I think that was his name—who was actually learning and developing.

👍

And I guess it's not just that... the older sequels really leaned into that claustrophobic, documentary-style vibe, whereas this new one feels different in that regard. So, maybe some longtime fans won't love it, but I suppose that's better than the movie just ripping off its own predecessors. That would be the worst way to go, I think.
