So😲 😲 I have to tell you guys about this scene yesterday at Orient... My sister and I headed over to Line (where they definitely don't have any dresses on sale, by the way) and we swung by Orient on the way. I figured, why not ask how much a cake for 280-300 people would run? We walk in, I ask one of the young guys working there, and he just shrugs like he has no clue. Then this older lady walks up—I'm assuming she’s the owner or something—and asks what kind we're looking for. I told her just a standard round cake, maybe four tiers, completely covered in chocolate glaze. She looks me dead in the eye and says around $2000😲 😲 😲 😲. I was like, you've gotta be kidding me, right?😕 But nope, she didn't blink. Honestly, I just went with it—no one has ever quoted me more than $1000 even at the fancy bakeries downtown. My sister and I just laughed and walked out... Can you actually believe that? Is there actual gold leaf on these things or what? It's insane. Looking back, I almost feel bad for not asking her why their cakes are supposedly so "special" compared to everyone else... I'd love to hear her take, because while the sweets are decent, they aren't exactly the best in town. Anyway, it's pretty much what peach recently wrote about them 👎 👎 👎
coastalmason68 said:aaa 😲 , I mean, does it really happen all that often—actually walking into a restaurant and completely ruining a cake?! Honestly, what could they even possibly do to you? Good grief, now we have to live in fear of that too 😠
Personally, I couldn't care less what happens to the cake—as long as someone covers the damage... ugh. There are plenty of other desserts out there, and frankly, that cake was just a massive waste of money anyway.😁
Rachel Rodriguez11 said:So, I was at this wedding expo the other day—can't even remember which booth it was, honestly—and this lady tells us when we ask about delivery that they’ve actually sent things via Greyhound 😲 😲 😲 all the way to San Diego, and everything arrived perfectly fine I mean, I guess... maybe my nerves just wouldn't handle it on the actual wedding day? Like, no way. I think I’d be staring at the ceiling for weeks straight, just totally losing sleep worrying if that cake would show up in one piece!
Man, this reminds me of that movie that played on TV a while back—you know, the one about planning a wedding for three daughters where the guy is late with the cake? He gets lost... then after an hour of delay, he basically flies into the venue—sudden braking, barely stops, and then... well, you can imagine what was left of the cake behind him😂 Honestly, some incredibly skilled, "ready-for-anything" wedding planner managed to fix the mess... I won't even go into detail, but they pulled off something straight out of a movie. There was cake everywhere in the van😬 😬 🤣
Aha.... Anyway, that’s actually a decent price for Vinny—but honestly, most decent bakeries are hitting those numbers now, so... I’m still torn between going with them or just heading over to Baskin-Robbins... can't make up my mind yet.😁
jadeeagle36 said:So, I actually reached out to the catering company to ask where I should pick up the cakes and treats for the big dessert spread. Apparently, if you're looking at cakes for something around 250 people, prices can swing anywhere from $567 all the way up to 2500 bucks. I’m still planning on checking with a few other local bakeries just to be safe, because you know how it is. Personally, I think those cakes covered in Ticino cream look pretty decent, but I’m leaning toward something with actual filling or maybe even a chocolate glaze—just feels more indulgent, I guess. They also look really classy when they're stacked on top of each other, though I'm having second thoughts about doing a tiered setup; maybe sticking to individual stands would be easier to manage.
I’d probably just go ahead and cover the whole thing in chocolate glaze.😍
Rachel Rodriguez11 said:Could someone please tell me how much a wedding cake usually runs, or what you guys ended up paying? I was asking around at Magnolia Bakery and they mentioned a wedding cake would be around $567 plus whatever delivery costs
$567 ??!?!!?!?!? 😲 😲 😲 I mean, that feels a little pricey to me, I guess... though I honestly have no clue what the going rate is for wedding cakes when you're catering to like 180-200 people....
Hmm, why is shipping so high... I mean, where are they even driving it from? It’s honestly not worth it—my advice? Just find a decent local bakery nearby because this is basically just flushing money down the toilet. But hey, if you really want to... go ahead and pay 😉
northernhawk87 said:Ashley Adams4, I haven't quite managed to break the news to my family yet—specifically the part where we're opting for fewer treats because there simply isn't any packaging for homemade goods 😁. I am quite certain my folks have some massive, stubborn ideas swirling around in their heads regarding this matter 😉. Where exactly is Emma located in that small town in the US? Is there a recognizable landmark or perhaps a well-known shop nearby that she could use to get her bearings? I find myself thinking that I really 🙂 must try those sweets for myself eventually.
Mine thought about skipping the treats too, but seeing how hard it is for her to let go, here we are... so for the thank-you gifts, I'll just scramble something together, whatever... honestly, I'm lost on what to do with these gifts—maybe a few photos, some small little things, maybe some booze (I think that's the best move, considering how much my partner and I love a good party with plenty of drinks😬)). But everyone is getting cookies... oh, and this weekend my mom is getting treats from the local bakery in that Small town in the US (Zachary Gray35 recommended them), so I'll let you know if she likes them and if we should start ordering from there😉.
Zachary Gray35 said:Man, Meli was my first choice because I've been buying from them for years just for the house. Their stuff is incredible—that strawberry cheese torso thing... man, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. But they're pricey. I'll pick up a pound here and there for the house or a few slices of cake, but when I did the math on 40lbs X $100, it just didn't make sense. Still, they're damn good.
I actually tried their pastries for the first time the other day and they’re legit. But about that price point... yeah, it hits hard for me right now because—get this—my mom told me today she’s planning on ordering 100kg of dessert.😲 😲 😲 😲 Don't even ask... I think it’s a bit 😵 overkill, but sweets are her absolute priority when it comes to weddings, so I get where she's coming from (plus, they got roasted at my sister's wedding, so now she’s acting paranoid😬). Anyway, we have to feed over 300 people—you can't have the dessert spread looking pathetic... so yeah, that's the situation.😁
Alex Moore28 said:And yet, here we are, having spent two whole pages just bickering! 🙄 🙄
Let's get back on track: in your honest opinion, which desserts are absolute "NO GOs" at a wedding?
Edit: excluding peach cobbler, obviously. 😬
Honestly, finding a decent pastry chef matters way more than stressing over which specific sweets to skip. As long as they aren't dumping massive amounts of margarine and sugar into everything—making every single thing taste identical—you should be fine. Personally, I’m all about those little dessert bites—truffles, chocolate ones, rum-filled... you name it. And I can't go wrong with a classic brownie. 😬 As for those peach pastries... ugh, my stomach actually turns just thinking about them. Gross. Though, I might still end up grabbing some just because they look pretty enough. 😬
boldbison26 said:Is it really fair to go against the wishes of the newlyweds just because peach cobbler is included in the dessert selection? It seems unfortunate; they might end up hungry if they aren't careful. The priority should be ordering desserts that satisfy the majority of guests rather than catering solely to the couple. I assume the caterers understand this logic. I read somewhere that about 30 percent of people absolutely love coconut, so it would be a mistake to exclude coconut options from a selection of 30 varieties just because I personally dislike them. Whether it is peach cobbler or any other pastry isn't the point. People generally either love peach cobbler or they don't. Perhaps peach cobbler is chosen simply because it looks elegant on a platter, provided it is prepared well. What a debate. I was merely responding to the idea that peach cobbler shouldn't be served just because the groom dislikes it. That doesn't strike me as a valid reason. By that logic, should we skip the wedding cake entirely if the couple doesn't like it? I believe many people don't actually enjoy cake, yet it remains a staple at American weddings. It isn't always about personal preference; it's about tradition, customs, or perhaps the overall impression it creates.
Then explain your logic—how are you supposed to pick a flavor? Are you choosing based on some arbitrary rule, or are you going to pick what your kids actually want versus what guests might prefer? It's honestly a pointless debate. You're basically arguing against a couple's right to design their own wedding however they see fit. Maybe you're someone who prefers following the crowd, but not everyone works like that. Some people prefer the "I did it my way" approach.👍
Joseph Watson10 said:I am fundamentally in agreement with vekmarica. While I certainly understand that this is your wedding day, why invite guests if you have no regard for their preferences? It would be akin to, say, hosting a group of vegetarians but serving nothing but pork because you and your husband happen to prefer bacon and sausage over anything green.
Oh please, you're overthinking this.🙄 based on how you're talking, it sounds like you think we should personally interview every single guest about their dietary preferences and drink choices. I mean, god forbid someone gets offended because you didn't stock enough Jack Daniel for them—it's a popular choice, after all. Should we also ask if they want one of a hundred different types of cake, or maybe add another fifty options just to be safe? Give me a break... This kind of commentary only works if you're the type of person who micromanages every tiny detail for every guest; otherwise, it just feels incredibly hypocritical.👎
boldbison26 said:A friend of mine has actually stopped taking wedding cake orders because she claims brides are just too difficult to please once the pre-wedding nerves kick in. They often can't even decide what they want. I know I’m probably going to get some heat for this, but I find it silly to overthink whether you want strawberries in your pastry or not. Honestly, the whole topic doesn't interest me much; I only dropped by to see what kind of treats people are serving at weddings since I enjoy baking high-quality desserts myself. Taylor Swift, thank you so much for the help. You provided exactly what I needed. Your cakes were wonderful, and I am certain most guests enjoyed them. It seems you selected flavors that appealed to the crowd rather than just catering to the couple's specific tastes. Best regards!
Honestly? It’s not that brides don't know what they want. They usually have a very clear vision—it's just that most pastry chefs don't actually have the skills to pull it off. So, suddenly, we're the "hysterical" ones. When a bride asks for something that seems impossible to a mediocre baker, but an elite chef at a place like Magnolia Bakery could whip up in their sleep... well, that’s just her being "difficult" because the talent isn't there.👎
😬 I immediately thought of one in that shopping mall over in Denver—the big complex where H&M is located—so check it out if you’re ever in the area. 😁 Honestly, they're pretty common here, though besides the ones at Target, nothing specific jumps to mind right now—maybe those fancy gourmet brands? Try looking around, you might stumble onto something unique... Not sure exactly what you're after, though—what kind of chocolate are we talking about, and what's the occasion? 😕
Hey ladies, please DM me some phone numbers for cookie bakers... I'm looking for recommendations on where you used to work. 😍 Sly, I’m looking at you specifically—I remember you raving about them, and honestly, just thinking about those cookies makes my mouth water. And obviously, let's talk prices... $37 per kg for M&M style; $30 per kg from Vincek... is there anything more budget-friendly out there? If I recall correctly, prices were hovering around $23😕. Please, drop the info... love you guys! 😘 😘
northernhawk87 said:Ahaaaa, well, I suppose that makes it 👍 just as seamless as ordering everything straight to your aunt’s house in Chicago 😬 And honestly, they really do appeal to me!!! I am quite certain they are superior to the standard versions, particularly because of those handles 😉 Jos, especially once you include your little "advertisement" 😍
😍 😍 I've already played that scenario out in my head😬
So, I’ve developed this weird obsession with those classic Chinese takeout boxes—already found a template to make my own, but honestly, it sounds like too much work. Instead, I found a bulk deal on eBay for 200 plain white ones with shipping to the States (which is twice what the local guys charge 😬). They come out to $0.77 per box... I'm just praying Customs doesn't hit me with a bill higher than $67 (the total package is about 450), otherwise, I'll be out at least $1.25... what do you think? Also, does anyone know if any of the local Chinese spots around town keep a stash of those takeout containers lying around? 😕
EDIT: Turns out the ones listed in DTP are actually more expensive than my whole order including customs 😬
Urgent request, please... ladies, whether you're married or just know people who are—how much did you end up paying per cookie for those dessert boxes?😕
Arthur Turner17 said:Just wanted to vent about my little "interaction" with Orient Bakery and Vince!
My mom called Vince the other day to check on wedding cake pricing for a certain number of guests, and the lady there said anything from $1,000 up to maybe $400 for about 120 people (depending on the flavor) including delivery!
So we decided to call Orient to compare, and this guy just snaps at us 😲 ... we're just asking for basic info—prices, delivery, the whole nine yards for a 120-person wedding—and this jerk starts talking trash ... he says he doesn't give out that kind of info over the phone 🙄 , claims others might be cheaper but they don't have the quality 😎 , and then basically brags that he's the best in the city and would come see us if everyone actually wanted his info 😠 , adding that if you want quality, you're gonna pay the price 👎 ... we were honestly stunned and just asked if he was going to answer our questions or not 😍 , but what's the deal? If I'm calling from San Diego because I want your cake, am I supposed to fly out to your shop just so you can act all high and mighty before you'll even tell me a price 😕 ??? Seriously, mister... he just does whatever he wants and hangs up on us 👎 !!! OF COURSE we're done with them. Even if they're supposedly the best on the planet, they won't be seeing us again! Look, I get that quality costs money—whether it's cakes, flowers, catering, whatever—but this attitude totally 😲 !
Just thought you guys should know 😘
😂 😂 😂 This hit me hard this morning—I can't stop laughing because I spent the last two days seriously thinking about using Orient for my wedding cake🤣 😬 and then you get this... absolutely ridiculous... Let's all go ahead and start calling them one by one to ask for quotes just to see how much more he can blow up at us.😬
