Anesthesia, Resuscitation, and ICU: Q&A in Health ·
I’ve got a question... I have this surgery coming up in about a week, should only take maybe 30 minutes...
From what I gather, they’re just going to use some kind of light local anesthesia—you know, just a little sedation to knock you out.

Honestly, before I stumbled onto this page, I wasn't even really worried. Now? I'm pretty terrified.
I can't stop thinking about why that cocktail they use for anesthesia includes a drug designed to cause memory loss... specifically so we don't remember what happens during the procedure. Why is that necessary to forget?

And another thing... regarding what was mentioned about people feeling pain but being unable to move... how common is that, really?

Sorry for all the questions, it's just... I'm starting to get really freaked out about this whole thing. And based on my talk with the anesthesiologist, it doesn't look like I'll be chatting much with them, maybe just a few minutes right before it starts.

feralheron14 said:I was wondering if there might be any clubs located within the greater metropolitan area or perhaps somewhere in the surrounding suburbs that specialize in training Yamakazi—specifically parkour. It’s something that has captured my interest since I was quite young, and I have a sincere desire to begin training properly, yet I haven't been able to find a single organization that truly focuses on this specific discipline. Any information or leads you could provide would be incredibly meaningful to me...

In case you aren't entirely certain what I am referring to, I believe the following might offer some helpful context...

Thank you all in advance for your help...

There isn't an official club (at least there wasn't when I was looking), but check out the community site www.parkour.org. That's where people coordinate meetups... you can just ask if you can jump in with them. It’s not really a formal setup, more like a group of friends doing their own thing...
Your best bet is to sign up there and ask... most of them are pretty chill and happy to help out...

On the other hand, if you have no interest in striking, why bother with Karate? There’s actually some logic to those questions after all... 😁

🙂

Here's an example response:
"Do you like dressing up in costumes, even in places where there are other people?"

option - "Possibly"

"After deep contemplation, the Advisor concludes that you should be walking along the path of Aikido."

Alright, I'll kick things off with the first ad.
Give this a look - www.kuksuldocroatia.com - the coach is top-notch, the crew is solid. It’s a small group, which is nice. The sessions are pretty intense, too... they cover just about every angle of fighting. We don't do official competitions yet, though we do plenty of sparring. As for how effective it actually is in a real fight... I can't really vouch for that part quite yet. Haven't found myself in a situation where I actually needed to use what I've learned...

We’ve got training sessions running all summer long. Just constant time outdoors, and our whole schedule has been completely flipped upside down...
Who's the real master here? in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
Justin Watson58, you’ve sure spent a lot of time typing out those three little words, "I don't know."
On a different note... I don't really see myself reaching master status. I just train because I love it, honestly. I'm not losing sleep over whether or not I'll actually become a master one day...

I mean, look, if you’re ninety and can barely make it across the room, you probably aren't going to be mastering advanced circular movements or anything like that... and sure, a toddler isn't exactly going to grasp leverage, but aside from that, people are right when they say those prime years are between 7 and 77.
Martial arts isn't nuclear physics or anything... you can learn just about anything at any age, really, provided you've got the grit to stick with it. Some folks are going to need way more repetitions than others, I guess, but everyone is capable of learning.

placidbison20 said:Of course strength matters. You can definitely build it if you follow a proper training program.
But personally, I think dedicating massive chunks of training time solely to strength exercises is overkill. It’s really up to each individual to take care of their physical conditioning on their own time.
To me, training sessions should be focused on technique, drills, and similar skill work.

I'm totally with you there. It just sounded a bit weird when you said BJJ would "build strength" because of the nature of the sport.
Daniel Garcia - exactly. Most of the leverage comes down to speed and technical precision rather than raw power. Though, I do get the feeling that being stronger makes you faster... and makes executing those submissions feel a lot smoother. (Assuming you aren't just bodybuilding, but actually focusing on functional strength and mobility).

Does strength actually get in your way when you're doing Aikido?? 😕
Are you guys even bothering with any strength training at all?

silverdriver6 said:And honestly, where else can you even find anyone like them? I mean, they're the only ones I know who actually operate like this...

I tracked down three more shops that carry them, though honestly, none of them are worth the trouble. Two are just those import places, and frankly, I wouldn't trust them with a katana if my life depended on it. Then there's that one shop near the old stone gates... they mostly deal in "movie prop" gear, which is pretty pathetic. It’s bad enough that the blades actually wobble—the tang isn't even secured properly. Just junk...

Did anyone actually manage to sit through this thing? I gave up after about 7 minutes...

It’s hard to really get this across through a screen.
Look, when you throw a punch, don't let your arm go completely straight... if you lock it out like that, you're just asking to wreck your elbow. You want to hit with your knuckles, then snap that hand right back into your guard immediately—keep it tucked near your chin. Honestly, trying to explain the exact angle of your arm and how to hold your guard over the internet is a lost cause. You really need to get down to a gym for this.
Besides, even if you find a good boxing gym to train at, you still have to put in the work at home, drilling the techniques constantly. That's the only way anyone can actually teach you how to do it right.

It’s actually pretty close to you, so maybe just head over, check out a training session, and see for yourself...
For boxing or kickboxing... I think Justin Adams5 would be the best person to walk you through it all.

Sorry, I didn't really make sense there...
I was actually talking about that first photo—you know, the tsuba, fuchi, kashira...

Edward Sanchez72, that breakdown you did on katanas was top-tier... really liked the photos too. but, I was wondering if you could dive a bit deeper... maybe explain what all those specific parts you listed actually do?

Happy holidays, Alexander Long37, and good luck with that job you're heading off to.
I’m with Gerald Smith76 on this one, though from what I can tell, everyone just ignores his (Panzer's) posts anyway... so I don't see much point in drawing attention to him right now. He should probably try saying something actually intelligent first, instead of just trashing everything and everyone...

I’ve no idea what the scene is like in San Diego right now, but if you’re only staying for a few months, you might as well grab something you can carry over to NYC once you land there... or just find somewhere to build up some serious grit and conditioning. Maybe boxing, wrestling, something like that... just to get that foundation ready for whatever fighting style you end up picking later on.
What if martial arts didn't exist? in Martial Arts & Combat Sports ·
I don't know, depends on what actually catches my eye... I’ve always been drawn to Ninjutsu, mostly because it feels pretty close to what I’m already working on myself.
