Wait, what on earth is this "iron palm" exercise?

swiftridge40 said:So, what exactly are you training if you don't mind me asking? Everyone here seems so secretive...

Nobody’s being secretive, honestly. If you actually look, everyone lists their training right here:
The Manhattan Project—someone who joins a forum just to call people liars... sounds like they don't have much going on in their actual life.
PS. It's not my place to say who Gladiator is, but if I remember correctly, he mentioned a few times that he'd drop his full name if anyone really wanted to know...

Gladiator used to train the same stuff I’m grinding through right now for a bit... he actually still hangs out with my coach, too. I even know his name and have some old photos from when he was over at that Jiu-Jitsu seminar in Germany...
Manhattan Project, seriously, go find a life outside this forum and just stop posting already.

Paul Peterson8 said:you’re honestly unbelievable! if someone actually came after you, you’d probably just laugh it off like it was some big joke, wouldn't you?
your lack of seriousness just proves you've never had to deal with anything genuinely heavy in your life... you clearly don't get what friendship or trust actually means, which is pretty sad, really...
Gladiator went through something genuinely rough and decided to open up to us because he thinks we're worth it. He trusts us. I’d feel like the absolute lowest person on earth if I didn't honor that trust and show some empathy, especially since—even though I don't know him personally—I see Gladiator as a decent, respectful guy who hasn't done anything to warrant this kind of treatment.
in moments like this, if you don't have anything constructive to contribute, just stay quiet... and at the very least, stop attacking Gladiator or the rest of us.

GLADIATOR, look, you made it through... that's all that matters. hang in there.

🙏 🙏 I'm with them on this one. 👍

Man, I’m really sorry to hear you got caught up in that... seriously sucks. Just focus on getting better so you can get back to your training and, well, back here to the boards.
You hit the nail on the head though—idiots are everywhere, honestly. Hopefully, a good chunk of them end up behind bars for once.
Wishing you a speedy recovery... really hoping there aren't any long-term issues from all this.

Drew Martin6 said:Why are you even dragging him into this?

I mean, look at the guy... he’s built for it. Standing 6'3" and pushing 230 lbs... if he’s looking for Judo, he’s definitely more about those throws and leverage than just swinging punches... it makes sense...

Regarding what you're looking for and those dimensions you mentioned... I honestly think you'd get the most out of wrestling or maybe some BJJ. You should check in with Robin Palmer3, he’s probably the best person to walk you through it all.

I guess it just comes down to focus, doesn't it...

Now people will actually be able to tell which parts you wrote yourself and which ones you're just "quoting."

Honestly, the best move is just to get away from him... maybe throw something hard at his head first to take him out, then deal with the rest later.

Well, obviously running away is always the superior choice. If you actually manage to escape, there’s really no need to go aiming for the head... you just keep moving and leave it all behind.

Defending against a knife is incredibly tough... especially if the guy actually knows what he's doing with it.
1. If someone comes at you with a knife, run. Get as much distance as possible and grab whatever hard object is nearby to hit them with... just use whatever's at hand.
2. Create space, push them back, or just throw a heavy punch to the face.
3. If you can't get away, your only option left is trying to block or use leverage... but those should always be your absolute last resorts.

Our coach brought a knife to training the other day to show us what a typical attack and defense looks like.
He held the knife and told my training partner to just run.
The coach simulated an attack—not literally, obviously—but my buddy was scrambling all over the mats trying to escape, and honestly, he didn't stand a chance at blocking or using leverage... he would've been cut or stabbed before he could even react.

👍 👍There’s no such thing as "taking" a knife... you might wrench it away from a broken hand, or maybe if the attacker is knocked unconscious.
Escaping a knife or pulling off a clean block is nearly impossible. Honestly, maybe the best move while they're still threatening you is to grab the arm holding the knife immediately and just hammer away at them... then maybe rip the arm out of the socket. That's probably the only sure thing.

Nice one, wanderingridge. 👍
What's with all this? It feels like everyone is starting something new this week...
it really depends on what kind of pain we're talking about...
but honestly, it feels less like a quick end and more like a lifetime of just... suffering.

Don't forget the socks, though.
And yeah, I'm with you on the karate gi situation. Some guy around here brought one over once and tried to pull off those basic local moves, but put him in a real BJJ class? No way he survives a single session...

Look, I'm about 6'1"... so when I grabbed that kimono, it was more like a 5'11" cut. Ended up being a little too baggy on me.

When I was first getting into this stuff, I actually had a few years where I just completely dropped the ball and did nothing at all.
Now, you get back to the gym, and those first few sessions? Yeah, you're going to struggle to keep up. It’s rough. But if you actually put in the work, the cardio and the strength come back faster than you'd think. Honestly, it just comes down to willpower.
I don't really know what's driving you to start training, but as long as you stay consistent, you'll be fine.

Where’s the hall entrance in Pavilion 25 at the convention center?
I found some area for tennis and badminton, but...

The hall entrance is just on the right side of the pavilion. You'll see doors with some pictures of kung fu, aikido, and street fighting on them. Right by the restrooms.
