Apparently, the shots are already hitting clinics in the US by September (I actually got mine already, could tell you where, but whatever, doesn't really matter...), mostly aimed at healthcare workers since they get priority and get it for free through work coverage. I know they start doing them in November too, but honestly? Seems like a joke to me... way too late when that first wave of flu usually starts rolling through around the same time.

Look, I don't know what kind of logic they used to explain why she "has" to get it, but a vaccinated person isn't some walking biohazard for everyone else.

And November isn't too late to get jabbed—flu season doesn't even really kick off in the States until December anyway.

Besides, there are all these other viruses out there with similar symptoms. Those can pop up whenever. But we aren't talking about those... those aren't caused by the actual flu viruses.

Because, you know, they’ve got a live virus right there in the shot—it just passes it straight to you without even making a big deal out of it, while he stays perfectly fine... turns out he's totally unaffected and you're the one left dealing with it.

Nah, look—even if he actually took a shot made from a live virus, the concentration is way too low to actually infect anyone... honestly, it just doesn't work like that.

Honestly, if you think about it, getting vaccinated might actually be totally counterproductive—like, we're talking about potentially triggering a massive spike in the epidemic instead of stopping it... just one big, messy cycle that keeps everything spiraling out of control.

Look, here's the thing—it actually takes about two weeks for the vaccine to really kick in and start doing its job, not four like everyone seems to think... anyway, around here in the States, we usually see the big push for vaccinations happening throughout November and leading right up to the middle of it... just a heads-up before the holiday madness hits.

mistyhound2 said:That’s exactly what I’ve been hearing—all my coworkers who got the shot ended up getting sick just a week later and had to bunkered down at home.

If it only took a week, they clearly waited way too long to get the jab.

Look, I have to get vaccinated... because if the flu actually hits me, there's no way I'm walking away from it without ending up in a hospital bed. Plus, I always get hit with some secondary bacterial infection—it’s like my body just gives up—so it's better if things stop right there.

On the flip side, whenever I’ve actually gotten the shot, I haven't caught anything... or if I did, it was nothing more than a tiny hiccup.

But hey, most healthy people don't really need the shot, you know? They can survive those few days of feeling like they're "dying" without any major drama.

😁maybe if the guy tries that old-school tactic of "if you're good... etc., I'll buy you a lollipop" he might actually end up buying something🤣

mostly, you'll just end up with the damn sucker 😎

electricdriver78 said:plus, the shot is basically just a shield against one specific strain of the flu—and even then, it’s not like it’s 100% foolproof...

so why bother getting poked for nothing? seriously...

but look, I think these vaccines target a few different types of viruses at once, so there's actually a pretty low chance they miss everything entirely...

Yeah, I’m thinking it's way too early for this stuff too—but then again, Kevin White5 says her roommates are already coming down with the flu, so that's why I'm even asking...

Kevin White5 said:Man, I’m seriously starting to feel like an outsider in my own house—everyone else is completely wiped out with the flu, and somehow, I’ve managed to dodge it so far... but honestly? I really need to get my act together and feel 100% by tomorrow, or I'm toast!

Wait, seriously... is the flu already making its rounds? Seriously?!

Is the flu season already kicking off this year? Seems way too early for that kind of nonsense to be hitting us...

And all those other viruses... ugh. Just great.

Look, I’m not dragging myself into work if I’ve got a fever—honestly, I can barely lift my head when that happens. Or if I’m hacking up a lung, coughing like crazy, or dealing with a nose that won't stop running... in those cases, I'm staying put because the last thing I want to do is spread that misery to everyone else. That's just not cool.
Linda Peterson said:It's true... I just wanted to say we throw these phrases around way too fast—it’s almost arrogant, really—when the truth is we’re just too lazy to actually show up for ourselves or the people we love. We always have a million excuses because there’s always something "more important" than just stopping to realize we’re alive and kicking... but honestly? It’s all total bullshit.

Things aren't always what they seem, or whatever...

You probably don't even realize you're passing people on the street every day who are fighting tooth and nail just to stay healthy. They live totally "normal" lives—you wouldn't know the difference, not even by how much they care about their families... and they don't need any damn excuses.

When you first hit a wall with your health, besides the fear, the absolute worst part is that feeling of being totally isolated from everyone else who isn't sick. It's this sense that you can't just "live like everyone else"—which basically means acting superficial—plus that freaking internal clock ticking in your head, making you overthink every single tiny decision you make...

But after a while, you start living and acting "normal" again. Sure, only *you* know how much energy it actually takes to pull that off, but you eventually realize you still have the freedom to be yourself... you can even choose to be "superficial" if that's what you feel like doing in the moment.

There's nothing wrong with being superficial. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it feels good... 😁 🙂

One day it’s this specific sugar that’s the enemy, then it’s that particular flour... one guru swears by meat, the next one thinks dairy is poison, and don't even get me started on the whole soy debate.

Exactly. It's the same deal with chemists—everyone’s got their own "theory" on the relative molecular mass of a carbon atom, or what the actual chemical formula for pure aspirin is, or whether insulin counts as a hormone or an enzyme 😁 —not to mention basic stuff like pH levels, or if hitting the fructose too hard actually spikes your blood glucose and all that nonsense

Forgot to add the most important part: every amateur chemist...

Oh please, give me a break... you are way too naive.

Everything is laid out perfectly online—just a quick Google search and boom, you're an expert. Sure, you might mix up a few technical terms here and there, but who actually cares about that? At the end of the day, the point is somewhere in there... 😁

Honestly, I remember back when I used to hang out at those fancy health seminars in New York, everyone would start rambling about diets and "foods with negative caloric value" and all those other ridiculous theories... 😬 I actually fell for it for a while, but I've since checked out. It's mostly just... 😁

haha, man, I don't know—grab a textbook and check for yourself! maybe I'm tripping, but last thing I remember...

you go ahead, I don't need to look up this stuff 🙂

hypoglycemia is just low blood sugar. blood sugar is glucose. basically, glucose gets used for energy by breaking down into pyruvate (that's glycolysis for the nerds out there).

now, fructose *can* enter the glycolysis process, but it goes through the fructose-1-phosphate pathway, which needs the fructokinase enzyme. on the flip side, fructose can also jump into glycolysis by turning into fructose-6-phosphate, but that requires hexokinase. the catch? fructose's affinity for that enzyme is way lower than glucose's, so that route is pretty unlikely.

when you're crashing from hypoglycemia, you need something that hits your bloodstream fast as pure glucose. your best bet is straight glucose, then sucrose, then starch. fructose? it isn't gonna save you anytime soon.

Taylor Brown61 said:fructose—since it’s basically just "pure" fruit sugar—gets absorbed by your body almost instantly. So, if someone’s feeling crappy and their blood sugar is bottoming out, grabbing something with fructose is probably your best bet... yeah, it costs a bit more, but it does the trick... pretty much like cane sugar! 👋
but anyway, back to those artificial sweeteners... I was chatting with some doctors recently and they told me the move is to go for The Beatles (kill me now, I can't even spell it right)... apparently, aspartame has the lowest impact, and honestly, that's the main thing that matters!

No, no, no, no way

glucose spikes your sugar fast. Fructose absorbs way, way, WAY slower than that.

dustycanyon6 said:Look, I only used the word "hormone" to describe a substance produced by an animal or human body where a deficiency causes issues. You're still out here throwing around terms like "biochemistry" and "physiology" just to flex on me over a mistake that isn't even that big of a deal—at least not in the way I was actually using the word.

🤣

Since when did basic common sense become "showing off"? Oh right... we live in America. 😢

shadowfalcon33 said:Hold up, hold up... You actually ran an experiment?!

Look, I wasn't trying to be some rogue scientist out to prove a point to anyone else... it was just that I noticed my blood sugar spikes look pretty much identical whether I'm using white sugar or brown sugar.

So, the second time around, I timed how fast my glucose levels shot up 20 minutes after eating 30g of standard white sugar. Then I waited a few days until I felt that same hypoglycemia hitting me—same trigger, roughly the same glucose level—but instead of going for the white stuff, I grabbed 30g of brown sugar and checked my levels again at the 20-minute mark.

I mean, sure, I should probably run this another 5 or 6 times to be "official," but for what I actually needed to know—can I bail myself out of a low if there’s no glucose tabs or pure sucrose nearby and I've only got brown sugar on hand?—this little test was more than enough. Basically, yeah, I can use brown sugar just like white; they both kick my sugar levels up just as effectively.

velvetpilot212 said:why the hell are you guys making such a massive deal out of this? saying positive thinking, chilling out, or breathing exercises are "stupid" is just... wow. honestly, you could just ignore the whole topic, but you guys seem so obsessed with getting worked up about it... like you don't have anything better to do with your lives (and I know you do 👍 )

hard to say I have anything smarter to do right now when I'm stuck browsing this forum 😁

look, I never actually said relaxing or breathing exercises were nonsense—quite the opposite, actually. from my own experience, those techniques are legit useful

what's actually stupid is that pseudo-scientific theory trying to act like there's some exact, mathematical mechanism explaining how those things "heal" you

Look, I'm way younger than most of you guys—I barely even know what a 401(k) is yet...

velvetpilot212 said:Look, you can have your own opinion on this stuff, sure, but you aren't exactly qualified to lecture anyone on how alternative medicine actually works unless you're out there practicing it yourself... or used to.

Oh, I am *more* than qualified to say that invoking "negative energy" is total nonsense. That’s really the core of the issue—you've got people in the holistic wellness scene trying to dress up their methods using jargon from "real" science to sound legit.

And of course, they just end up swinging wildly like Max 😁 at the plate... but hey, what can you do? They're the "alternative" crowd and I'm not, so apparently, I don't get a vote in how much nonsense gets peddled. 😁

shadowfalcon33 said:It feels like those brown sugar advocates keep pushing this idea—you know, the whole thing about it entering your bloodstream more slowly... like it’s somehow "better" or whatever.

Nah, total myth. Absorption into the blood is just as fast. I've actually measured it myself... 😉
