Headphone Recommendations (Megathread) in Computer Peripherals ·
It is finally time to invest in some new headphones. 😁 Is there anything actually worth considering for under $110 that manages to check all of these boxes:
- They absolutely must be wireless.
- Over-ear design is required; closed-back would be ideal, though I suppose open-back isn't a total dealbreaker.
- They need to be viable for gaming—meaning zero latency issues. I don't specifically need a microphone 🤷, though if one is included, it shouldn't be intrusive or unnecessarily bulky.
- Decent sound quality for listening to music.

Or am I simply going to have to stretch my budget a bit further if I want anything remotely decent? 😳

Does anyone have a recommendation for a private ophthalmologist? What are your thoughts on the Optic Center? 🤔
Looking for a specialist... in Health ·
Does anyone have a recommendation for an ophthalmologist in Washington, D.C., specifically one who accepts Medicare? 🙂
And how exactly does one distinguish between the fan pit passes and those standard tickets? 😕 Is there some sort of numerical designation on the pass that indicates the tier, or is it something else entirely? 🤷
Has anyone here recently scheduled an MRI appointment? I am trying to gauge what the current wait times look like in our area. I suspect I’m going to need one for this knee issue, but if the backlog at the local hospital is too extensive, I will likely just have to pay out of pocket and go through a private clinic instead. 🙂

If staying strictly on one's back is the only option, there are various specialized pressure-relief mattresses available—you can even rent them, if you know where to look, so please do your own research online.

Thank you, I had no idea those could be rented.🙂
The patient isn't completely immobile, but they have multiple fractures, which means turning is absolutely forbidden.

Donna Johnson16 said:those could very well be the initial symptoms of pressure sores.

The sheer weight of the body creates intense pressure trapped between the bone, the soft tissue, and whatever surface you happen to be sitting or lying on; once you remain in one position long enough without shifting, blood and lymphatic circulation drop so significantly that the tissue actually begins to necrotize—essentially, it starts dying. For severely ill patients confined to a hospital bed, two hours of total immobility is considered the absolute limit before they must be repositioned to prevent open wounds from forming. Extreme cold acts in a strikingly similar fashion on the skin and subcutaneous tissue.

One must avoid prolonged periods of inactivity, wearing overly restrictive clothing like tight jeans, or maintaining continuous pressure on any area of tissue that is already showing signs ranging from mild redness to deep discoloration.

While patients are generally advised to pay meticulous attention to their nutrition and hydration, in your specific situation, I would go further: stand up at least every 45 minutes, stretch out, massage the affected areas, increase your intake of plain water, and ensure you are adding sufficient protein and Vitamin C to your diet; furthermore, find an alternative posture for studying and perhaps swap out your desk chair cushion for a different type of support.

...

Since we are discussing pressure sores—roughly how much time elapses before the first symptoms manifest? And what is the protocol for prevention if a patient is forced to remain strictly on their back for an extended period, say at least a month? 😢
Maria Fisher46 said:Dear lady,

It is absolutely imperative to pinpoint the precise underlying cause of anemia. One cannot ignore the fact that vegetarians inherently face a heightened risk of iron deficiency, or sideropenia, due to lower systemic iron levels.

However, for true clinical anemia—characterized by a significant drop in hemoglobin levels—to actually manifest, there typically must be an additional complicating factor beyond just diet alone. In women, this is most frequently attributed to heavy menstrual cycles, though various other medical reasons could certainly be at play, all of which require thorough clarification.

A much more detailed medical history must be taken; one needs specific data regarding dietary intake and meal patterns, a more precise definition of menstrual cycles through targeted questioning, and further inquiries into potential past pregnancies or family history. Only by considering age and these holistic factors can we truly assess why this anemia has occurred.

Only once the exact etiology of the anemia is established should treatment involving iron supplements begin, and Heferol is certainly one such option.

Best regards. 🙂

How lovely. 😁 My doctor just handed me Heferol and called it a day. 🤷
Maria Fisher46 said:Dear lady,

Based on the specific portion of the lab results you provided, one could reasonably conclude that you are anemic; specifically, it appears to be a mild case where the red blood cell volume is slightly reduced, and their paleness suggests this is indeed iron-deficiency anemia.

If I may be so bold as to ask, what is the nature of your menstrual cycle? Furthermore, how would you describe your diet—are you following any particular nutritional regimen, and do you consume meat? Has a definitive cause for this anemia actually been established yet?

My periods are standard, perhaps a bit heavier during the first two days, but nothing out of the ordinary.🙂 I am a vegetarian (lacto-ovo).
In the past, my hemoglobin levels have frequently hovered at the very bottom of the acceptable range, yet I have never required medication, nor has my doctor ever bothered to suggest any treatment.
As for the root cause of the anemia, I can only assume it stems from an insufficient intake of iron through my diet.🤷
Just how bad is this situation? I am only listing the values that fall outside the standard reference ranges:

hemoglobin 112 (ref. 119-157)
MCV 82 (ref. 83-97.2)
MCH 25.8 (ref. 27.4-33.9)
MCHC 314 (ref. 320-345)
hematocrit 0.356 (ref. 0.356-0.470)

Furthermore, both anisocytosis and hypochromia came back positive.

My doctor prescribed Heferol, but after doing a bit of digging online, I find myself feeling somewhat apprehensive about actually starting the treatment.🙂

slydriver52 said:I recall coming across some information regarding this very topic. Essentially, the rapid absorption—or rather, the oxidation occurring within the liver—converts a significant portion of whey into glucose via gluconeogenesis, regardless of whether it is consumed alongside carbohydrates or on its own, ugh. There are studies documenting this phenomenon, though one must admit that research in this area remains somewhat insufficient...............
Furthermore, does such a distinction even matter for the average recreational lifter? While the speed of absorption provides a slight edge to whey, is it truly so significant for repairing microtrauma when compared to other protein sources? In principle, you could simply consume a solid meal following your workout consisting of egg whites or chicken paired with some sort of ugh (white bread), and the impact on your recovery would be virtually identical. I am speaking, of course, about casual gym-goers who aren't training twice a day, six days a week.
From a purely financial standpoint, I find myself opting for supplements—whether it be pure whey or a blend—simply because it is far more cost-effective and efficient than the labor of prepping a full lunch every single day.

So, does this mean a protein blend would actually be superior for consumption throughout the day or in the morning (not as a post-workout meal replacement, but merely as a supplement to boost daily protein intake)? 🤔

Arthur Sanchez79 said:Has anyone here actually tried supplements from that guy on Craigslist selling under the name Protoshop?

I’ve been wondering about this myself.🙂 This individual claims to offer Dymatize Elite Whey at the "lowest prices in the United States,"😁 but can we really trust it?

By the way, is this any good? Would I be better off grabbing that specific blend or just sticking to standard whey?😕

Paul Garcia3 said:I probably should have just kept my mouth shut...

You’re absolutely right, Rebecca Myers38... I stepped in it there.

Let me correct myself properly... an Inkospor shake or some Dymatize protein is actually better than actual food.

And by "actual food," I assume you mean the list you provided above? I don't touch any of that stuff, except maybe some low-fat cottage cheese 🤷 so, yes, I'd take an Inkospor tub or Dymatize over those options any day. 😉

Paul Garcia3 said:Chicken, turkey, beef, lamb, tuna, low-fat cottage cheese... honestly, all of this is cheaper than trying to buy high-quality whey protein here in the States.

Everything that actually qualifies as decent whey in our country is overpriced; you are much better off just buying real food... or perhaps find someone online selling it under the table, or check Amazon, eBay, or some direct-to-consumer sites... even after you factor in shipping and taxes, it will still be cheaper (unfortunately).

P.S. if you even have to ask a question like this, you don't need whey—you need a solid diet and a proper training program.

P.P.S. don't go thinking I'm trying to act superior... other members have already answered these kinds of questions; it’s all written here somewhere, you just need to actually read it.

Oh, come on now, does this imply that brands like Optimum Nutrition or Dymatize aren't any good either...? 🙂

briskjackal5 said:LMAO @ women and math

However, I am more than willing to assist you with this calculation.
I require the following specific data points:
- Exactly how many training sessions would you complete within those 30 days (how many times would you be consuming it, strictly every single day?), and
- How much protein do you intend to consume following each individual workout?

Let us establish a baseline assumption that you have purchased 500g of powder, and from there, feel free to leave the rest to me; I will ensure all results are calculated precisely.

😁

No, when I referred to "no-name" brands on eBay, I was specifically discussing those obscure products that even Google struggles to identify.
As for Dymatize, I believe the probability of it being counterfeit is slim (though I certainly wouldn't rule out the possibility entirely).

-Stipe

Well, a little more than half a month would be accurate :-P. It stated that one scoop equals 30g, which means 500g would last for 16 servings.😁
I am currently working out (mostly) 6 times a week...
So, are you suggesting it makes no difference (in terms of muscle hypertrophy😬) whether I opt for casein to boost my daily protein intake, or whey to be used as my PWM?

I asked about eBay because I saw Dymatize Elite Whey 2.3kg listed for around $50, and if the prices are similar elsewhere, it’s just easier to grab it through eBay.🤷

briskjackal5 said:Then just drink them at 11.

@ Rebecca Myers38, if you are hunting for the absolute best value, your best bet might be to eventually start ordering from an online distributor like Bodybuilding.com using their larger bulk sizes. However, how are you supposed to know if you actually enjoy the flavor? You certainly wouldn't want to be stuck with a massive 5lb tub of something that tastes absolutely revolting, would you?

I haven't personally ordered from there or visited any local shops myself, so perhaps someone else here can provide more specific details regarding their shipping procedures. A few of my buddies head over to the local supplement warehouse every couple of weeks; if you find yourself needing more granular information and don't get an answer soon, feel free to shoot me a PM.

Every person I know avoids those cheap, unbranded proteins you find on random marketplace sites.

Right now, Inkospor Muscle Gainer options in banana flavor are on sale at GNC; they are priced at $33 instead of the usual $30 for a half-kilo, and this deal is open to everyone, not just professional athletes. I have no idea how long this promotion will last, though it typically doesn't run for months on end. You can check out the specifics at www.bodybuilding.com.
That is, IMO, currently by far the best buy available.
Edit - just a heads up, that isn't whey. Weren't you asking about protein in general earlier, rather than specifically whey?

-Stipe

If I take that half-kilo once a day, would it really only last me two weeks if my math is correct? 🤔
By the way, what do you mean by 'unbranded marketplace proteins'? Are you suggesting people are passing off something else as a premium brand like Dymatize? 😕

briskjackal5 said:She could honestly pick any of them.
Personally, I find that after drinking whey, I get hungry almost immediately, so whey just doesn't cut it for me. Is it possible you might experience the same thing?

The only thing you truly need to watch out for is ensuring that this "Muscle Gainer" or "protein powder" is actually packed with protein rather than just being a mountain of carbohydrates. For instance, there is a product called "Muscle Gainer" that is 85% protein, whereas UH and M have practically zero.
On the other hand, the Scitecov Muscle gainer is nothing more than a typical sugar bomb.

-Stipe

Alright, then which whey would be considered the best value? And is it even worth buying what people are listing on Craigslist, for example? Or is there somewhere else to find a better deal?
Best protein powders for muscle gain? in Hobbies & Leisure ·
I am currently weighing my options regarding a protein supplement purchase in the near future, though I find myself caught in a bit of a dilemma: should I opt for a standard whey isolate, or would a blend containing casein be more prudent? Given the undeniable fact that my daily protein intake is significantly lower than what is required for optimal results, 🤷
Pull-up bar too low under the doorframe? in Hobbies & Leisure ·
Drew Sanchez said:My issue is that I am looking to perform pull-ups at home.
Do you have any suggestions on where I might mount a bar? My door frame stands at about 6 feet 3 inches, which leads me to believe mounting a bar there would be far too low.

Does anyone know if there exists a specific type of bar designed to attach to a frame while allowing the body to hang clear of the opening?

Something similar to this:

If my memory serves me correctly, I believe I spotted a bar just like that over at Dick's Sporting Goods.
