Honestly, I really think you can run into situations like that at a local community health center, too. I actually remember this one incident where this totally irrational woman came in for a sinus scan and started demanding to be seen right away, basically insisting she should jump the line just because she was paying out of pocket instead of using insurance... let's just call it a local clinic.
I really need to get a standard blood and urine panel done as soon as possible, but I just can't seem to track down my doctor's referral in time. Is it actually possible to just walk in without a referral and pay out of pocket? If so, does anyone know roughly what the cost would be and how long it usually takes to get the results back? Also, I'm curious—how much would these same tests run me at a private lab like Quest Diagnostics or Labcorp?
Thanks so much for the help! 🙂

I think there’s a preservative-free option you can find on Amazon—it’s called Denk Mit, if I recall correctly—and it comes in white packaging. They specifically market it for people with allergies, so it might be worth double-checking the label just to be safe.

I’ve been seeing Dr. Frančević over on Zvonimirova Street for a few years now, and I have to say, I’m really happy with his care. He’s incredibly gentle—honestly, nothing ever hurts—and he actually takes the time to listen and answer every single question you have. He’s a really solid diagnostician, too. I originally went to him dealing with a pretty nasty infection involving chlamydia and a few other things, and he managed to get everything cleared up successfully. His nurse is also super sweet, and the facility itself is great; there's a private corner in the changing area so you can get ready comfortably. Overall, the atmosphere is very welcoming. As for the cost, I think it’s pretty much standard for a private practice: the exam, Pap smear, and ultrasound come out to about $167. On another note, I’ve seen some glowing reviews for Dr. Tadić, but I’m not so sure myself. I only saw her for an initial consultation back when I wasn't quite as young as I am now, and they didn't bother doing an ultrasound because they decided it wasn't necessary. Plus, she prescribed me this massive dose of antibiotics for Gardnerella that had everyone looking at me like I was crazy. So, yeah, I decided to move on from her.
I actually have a question of my own. I’ve heard that some doctors covered by insurance are a bit hesitant to write referrals if they know you usually see a private specialist. Lately, I’ve needed several cervical swabs done, which can get pretty pricey if you're paying out of pocket. My primary care physician used to handle the referrals for me (even though she technically shouldn't have), but since that isn't allowed anymore, I'm wondering: does anyone know of a general gynecologist covered by insurance who wouldn't make a big deal out of providing those kinds of referrals?
Looking for a specialist... in Health ·
If you're looking for a solid dentist in Chicago, I’d highly recommend the clinic run by Dr. Jadranka Štefanac-Papić—it’s right near Pike Place Market, I think it's on Ilica 3. Honestly, everyone there is super pleasant to deal with and they make sure you don't feel any pain at all, though I should mention it can get a little pricey: $100for a single tooth, it might be around $500 if things are really bad, and a standard cleaning is about $133.

Haha, when it comes to love... maybe? I guess everything changes once romance gets involved. 😍 🙂 I honestly want to say that things are going really well for me right now. I’ve definitely faced much tougher times in my life, and it truly hasn't ever felt quite this good. But, I wanted to ask—how can I prevent scarring? Usually, my skin heals pretty well on its own, but the last one left behind a really nasty mark. Does anyone have any advice or tips they swear by?

I was just thinking about something else regarding my allergies, and I see you’re already on top of it. Do you happen to know of any good hypoallergenic face creams? My facial skin is pretty sensitive—I get these red bumps and itchy patches quite often, especially around my eyes, in those spots where I assume my tears might hit whatever cream I'm wearing. I picked up a prescription ointment called Maxitrol at the pharmacy, which works well for treating the flare-ups, but I’d really love to find something that helps me avoid the irritation altogether...

Honey 🙂
Thanks so much, those tips are honestly super helpful—I’m going to go grab that cream right away. I was wondering though, do you still just wash with water, or do you actually use a specific soap down there? A while back, someone suggested Derma (I think that’s the name?) which is expensive as hell, and then I tried that Dr. Smith brand they carry at CVS. I’ve been using it for quite a while now, but when I really think about it, the stinging is just so constant and annoying... I’m thinking it might be the soap, or maybe it's my laundry detergent since we aren't using condoms anymore. Anyway, I'll probably just head to the clinic. Oh, by the way, do you happen to know how much a private appointment costs there?
Actually, I have a little tip for you too! Instead of using a razor, maybe try an electric shaver? It doesn't scrape off that top layer of skin, so you don't end up with that nasty irritation. It might not feel perfectly smooth, but it's still pretty good, and it won't sting or cause any infections.

My Pap smear actually came back completely clear—no issues at all. I don't have any unusual discharge, and my urine tests were totally fine too... it’s just this localized stinging sensation on the outside. But honestly, maybe it really is an allergy? That hadn't even crossed my mind! Now that you mention it, I remember having some irritation from condoms before, so we went looking for a different brand that might work better. Back then, I was just convinced it was a side effect from taking antibiotics or maybe some kind of yeast infection or something. I guess I've mentioned it to several doctors over the years, but none of them ever even suggested it might be an allergy.

I know that a burning sensation is usually a sign of inflammation, but what if there’s definitely no infection present? Over the last six months, I’ve actually visited my gynecologist twice because I was so certain I was dealing with some kind of inflammation, yet every single time, everything came back perfectly normal. I seem to have a similar issue with my throat as well, and when I went in for testing, they told me it was just an issue with my mucous membranes. Does anyone know if there’s any way to find relief?
