Wait, who was it actually?
I honestly always assumed Turković was the one behind that review.

I honestly can't bring myself to agree with this comparison between Indiana Jones and National Treasure.

In IJ Indy, you’re actually following genuine historical breadcrumbs—it feels much more like how Schliemann operated when he was hunting down the location of Troy.
But with NT Cage, it’s just a massive pile of manufactured clues that feel so forced they barely pass a basic logic test.
For instance, I mean, what on earth were the Founding Fathers thinking if they assumed Independence Hall wouldn't accidentally burn down or if Charlotte were to suddenly sink into the ocean?
And don't even get me started on all the other logical holes scattered throughout the plot.

Michael Winterbott is included here because the guy evolves so much with every single project, both in his themes and his visual style.
Regardless of how you feel about them, the Wachowski duo created one of the most influential films of the last five years—and that actually hits on one of the main criteria for making this list: having a distinct directorial signature. When you describe a movie as "something out of a Wes Anderson film", or "reminiscent of Seven", or even "having that Lynchian atmosphere", you're acknowledging that those directors have already carved out their own unique niche in the pantheon of cinema. D

Schumacher's A Day of Madness is just fascist garbage to me—it’s basically Taxi Driver reimagined for preschoolers. Honestly, I couldn't even bring myself to finish watching 8mm.

Where on earth did you pull McTiernan from now?
The guy's last truly solid film was over a decade ago.
Nowadays, he’s just another run-of-the-mill studio hire, pretty much in the same boat as Verhoeven.

And don't even get me started on Schumacher—he's basically Schumacher. 😛

...some billionaire who can afford just about anything, including a couple of generic British thugs to serve as his henchmen.

What really left me scratching my head, though, was the whole motivation behind why the heroes of the nation would bother creating such an absurdly convoluted series of over-the-top riddles.
I tried my best to come up with a logical explanation, but honestly, the only thing that ever crossed my mind was, "Just so some idiot could eventually turn the whole mess into a ridiculous movie." 😁

To put what that Frenchman said into my own words:

The absolute best way to push back against someone else's list is simply to go out and craft your very own one.

I honestly feel like Cage has never hit a lower point than this.

Well, it looks like they intentionally left out all the mainstream directors to favor those "auteur" types... if that's even how you say it 😁.

They definitely threw in a few clever curveballs just to get people talking—like including the Wachowski brothers, Davies, Morris, or my personal favorite move: swapping in Leigh Pawlikovski instead.

Of course, we really ought to keep in mind that this whole thread was actually started back in 2003. 😬
Some people here have clearly already overstayed their welcome (looking at you, Coen brothers).

I’d probably throw Altman onto the list—he’s an absolute legend and still has so much creative fire left in him 😁—but I’d personally swap out Sokurov for someone else. 😬

You don't really need to dive into deep, heavy-handed theories just to make sense of Mulholland; honestly, you just have to piece its little puzzle together.

I know I have a tape of Morris somewhere, but I haven't the slightest clue where I put it. 😁

Why not just go ahead and ask Peter Bradshaw, Xan Brooks, Molly Haskell, Derek Malcolm, Andrew Pulver, Ruby Rich, or Steve Rose?
I mean, if you look closely at the text right under his name, it actually explains quite clearly why he earned that top spot.

If I were the one making the call, though, I’d definitely put Errol Morris at number one.

Look, that’s just my own personal take on things. And honestly, I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way.

Why don't you try putting together your own list? Post it right here on the forum, and then we can all see exactly how many people jump in to call it 'nonsense.'

Good grief, the comments on this are something else! 🙄

Zachary King5 said:In my opinion, this whole list is just nonsense.
I honestly can't wrap my head around what kind of criteria you'd use to come up with something this ridiculous.

Look, this list was put together using the same method they use for pretty much any other major ranking out there:

a) You gather a solid group of people who actually work in the industry.
b) You ask each one of them to sit down and pick their own personal favorites from the best contemporary directors.
c) Then, you just aggregate all those individual lists into one big final tally.

It’s definitely not perfect, but it’s probably the most reliable way we have to do this right now.

Justin Patel said:I was just thinking about that movie where Howard Hughes is wandering around Texas like some sort of eccentric loner, spending time with a regular guy and trying to help him out financially, only for the legal system to absolutely tear that poor man apart.
It really was such a compelling film.

I'm guessing you're more into the guys, then. 😬

It’s actually pretty interesting how most of the superfans and cult followers basically admit themselves that it isn't even a "good" movie by any standard definition.

I honestly suspect they just latched onto that specific kind of chaotic energy you get when the whole theater is vibing together—where everyone shows up in corsets and fishnets just to shout "unknown". 😁

Man, cult followings are something else.
Honestly, there's really no point in even arguing about it.
slyrider16 said:I just can't wrap my head around why anyone would even attempt a movie based on Far Cry, considering the game doesn't even have much of a plot to begin with.

Do you honestly think Mr. Boll cares about things like narrative depth?

😁

If you really want to see what I mean, go check out the thread on BloodRayne; there's plenty of material there to help you diagnose whatever is going on with his mental state.
casualotter21 said:Uwe Boll[/B] — honestly, I haven't sat through anything he's directed, but any director with the name UWE BOLL (seriously, please just let me live, I can't even figure out how to pronounce it properly)

Wait, Üwe Böll?
I think there’s a short clip floating around somewhere online AVB (which is basically just Anderson versus Boll).
Has anyone actually sat through it yet? 😁

Anyway, slyrider16, people are having some pretty intense debates about Bollo over on the Bloodrayne topic.

blueranger12 actually thinks Vera Dreck should be making sandwiches out of aborted fetuses just to serve them to everyone at home. 😁
